I want SageTV to automatically change the channel for me...

My t.v. does this and before getting SageTV, I used the feature. The way it does it on my t.v. is through Guide Plus+ if any of you know what that is...

It would be cool if FT or maybe (if it's possible) one of the studio users could throw an option in there to "watch" a show... this is what that option would do if setup for a show:

1. set the show to record
2. change the channel when that show airs

ex. sometimes I'll start watching something just to pass the time until some movie comes on that I want to watch, and that's where sage could come in and change the channel for my lazy butt... because sometimes I forget it started because I became engrossed in some crap I originally wouldn't have started if I could have timeshift into the future (now that would be cool, future timeshifting)

no, no, no, I know it does that (behind the scenes).... what I mean is I would like it to actually change the channel to the show AND automaticallly switch from watching what I was watching to the newly setup show to be "watched"

this probably would already occur if I have one tuner, but I have five

Then what

Is this just so you would not have to return to the menu and start the show yourself, or is their another reason I'm just not seeing? I don't see this as being a very in demand option. In fact I would fint it downright annoying if my computer automatically changed the channel from something I was watching just because a scheduled recording was starting.

Ah, yes, with one tuner it does exactly what you describe. With multiple tuners, Sage does it's very best not to interupt anything, so it will start recording on another tuner so as not to interupt your current viewing.

Well there are times where I would like for it to interupt... maybe if sagetv was capable of doing this, an option panel could pop up to give you a choice to change channels or something. Implementing this wouldn't be hard, just give another option under the "record" option labeled "set to watch".... before the show comes on sagetv gives you the option to change the channel when it airs and then changes the channel at the appropriate time.

I can be hopeful that Frey listens to single requests around here...

Yo Reboot,

You're not alone here. Here at casa de LowTech the spousal unit always did that pre-HTPC days when we were using the old Hughes STB. She wanted certain favs to begin even if she was watching something else (for the noise I suppose).

On the Hughes box you simply selected the shows you wanted and when they began the channel would change automatically.

Me not being one to question the wisdom of Mrs. LowTech I accept this as a necessary function of TVism. For now she sets the STB (RCA) to pop up a reminder that something of interest is on channel XXX. Select XXX on the mote and life is good.

The function you are looking for, however, would be appreciated in this casa as well.

Interesting idea, could have Sage not only automatically change from the channel being viewed timeshifting (or switch from something previously recorded you're watching, or switch from a DVD your're watching etc.) but could flag for Sage to just watch it for you too...

I've been searching for an answer to this myself.

I have only one tuner. When I'm watching live tv and a scheduled recording or favorite comes up, it pops up asking if I want to change the channel. Problem is, if I'm not around or miss the pop-up, it will not record my favorite. I miss quite a bit of recordings this way.

I like having the pop-up saying a scheduled recording is coming up, but would like it to change to that channel if no input is given. I know Directv and others work this way.

I thought that was how the pop up window worked. if no answer to the pop up box occurs it changes the channel automatically. It is not an issue with me, I have 3 tuners and rarely watch live TV, and usually if I do want to watch live TV, I just bypass Sage all together, and watch the cable feed.

it should change the channel if a favorite or manual recording is about to begin and no response is given. I have 3 tuners myself so I haven't seen this, but I think thats how it should work, like Tivo does.

As for Robot's idea, I think an optional pop-up window to notify what recording is about to start would be nice, and option to auto change to that recording. This shouldn't be too hard to implement I assume. But it might be low on the priority list for SageTV though.

I'll need to do more testing on it to be sure. I know I have missed some of my recorordings because of this. May just have a glitch in mine somewhere.

Well, I did try it out while I was watching. Apparently, when it changes the channel, it stops live tv completely. I have only one capture card. But it did seem to work.

I would also like to see a feature like this.

Back when I had Dish Network, I would actually go thru the guide each night and set reminders for the shows I wanted to watch. I don't remember the exact details, but I think I set them to auto change the channel 1 minute before the air time. If I was watching something, I would just hit the previous channel button and be taken to what I was watching. When that was done, one more press of the previous button and I was watching what I set the reminder for. I would have to guess that the main reason for this feature was so that you could set the reminders and then program the vcr to record based on the same schedule.

When I went to cable, the STB would allow me to set reminders, but it would not auto change the channel. There would be a pop-up that would ask you if it could change the channel.
