Viewing DVD's with MVP

what do you guys use to rip your DVD's to MPG's?
I have an MVP and want to watch DVD's on it, and the only way I can do this is to rip them as Mpgs.
I am planning on buying another firewire drive to store DVD's that are converted to mpgs.

google seems to produce some shoddy results for 'DVD to Mpeg converter'.

Any help would be grand!

What do you use to do this?
I use ShrinkDVD to rip my DVD's to my hard drive, butI'm not sure if it has an option to rip as a .vob file.

But you will also need to convert the audio from AC3 to MPEG.

To 2nd what Stanger said, the video must be in MPEG format (MPEG-2 for sure, not sure MPEG-1 is compatible) and the audio must be in MP3.

go to http://www.doom9.org for starter guides on ripping DVD's

Might want to be careful about the audio, I don't know if MP3 works. MPEG files usually have MPEG 1 layer 2 audio where MP3s are MPEG 1 layer 3.

Is this going to be easy?
I don't really want to have to spend a lot of time doing this.
At the moment I just rip my DVD's in using 'ShrinkDVD' which is dead easy (3 or 4 steps). What I am after is one simple program that just rips the DVD as an MPEG2 file

I am looking for the same thing... I need some sort of client device that will playback DVDs stored on a media server. I am willing to convert them if it's not a huge pain.

There are a lot of devices out there... MVP, Actiontec, D-Link and even the Linksys stuff for MCE, what do you guys recommend?

I have found a couple programs that will take the .vob and convert to an .avi file. Had anyone tried an .avi file to the MVP? If not then we might have to go from .vob to .avi to .mpeg.

Let me know if the .avi's have any draw backs.

Do you think that the .avi's will work ok on the MediaMVP? or should I still plan on converting everything to Mpeg?

You guys may want to look at DVD2MPG, although I think it converts to VCD (MPEG1) instead of MPEG2.

the mediamvp will play .avi's but only when you use the base software. when you load the mvp with the plugin beta software over at the hardware forum it precludes the ability to playback avi's.

personally i think the mvp is a pretty crappy solution and i'd prefer to wait for better support of a pinnacle showcenter (or similar)

the showcenter will already do everything short of stream live tv but no sage UI.

Well, each to their own.

Only problem with that philosophy is:
1. Showcenter costs 4x more than a Media MVP (if I remember right)
2. No one is making a client for the Showcenter currently. So may not ever happen... And I certainly do not want to wait forever for a client.

That being said, I DO wish that a more capable set top box was supported as a Sage Client. So we agree there.

Until then I will fully enjoy my Media MVP client.

you can use the actiontec box available from directron (165 each or 228 a pair)

this is basically the same as the pinnacle showcenter and if you read some of cayars' posts regarding this device it has quite a positive outlook and is significantly better than the mvp.

problem with the mvp plugin is that it only supports s-video out, no ac3 and no mpeg4/avi.
