SageTV on EPIA

I'm trying to get my HTPC up and running on a EPIA M10000, with WinTV PVR350.

Is anyone using SageTV on an EPIA motherboard? What mpeg2 codec works best? Also, do any of them take advantage of the EPIA mpeg2 decoder?

(The PVR350 decoder/tvout looks great, and uses low CPU, but is next to useless without the on screen display. Hopefully SageTV will implement this in the near future!!)

i'm not real familiar with the epias, the M has an onboard Mpeg2 decoder though

i think if you use the codec included with powerdvd it allows you to use the onboard hardware acceleration

The PVR-350 output doesn't have to be useless. My TV happens to have more than one video input, so I have to TV out from the EPIA connected to one video input, and the PVR-350 to another. Then I'm using a One-For-All remote with macros to automatically switch between them.. If for example, I press the "Guide" button, it automatically switches to the right video input and brings up the guide. Then, when I start watching a show, it automatically switch over to the PVR-350 output. It's not ideal, but it works well in most cases. I use the actual OSD very little when watching a show. To skip a commercial break I just run a macro as well. So it can be made to work quite well.

The TV out on the EPIA is decent, but it has too much overscan for my taste. I have yet to find a way to fine tune the overscan.

The EPIA hardware acceleration works with Cyberlinks Decoder and with the InterVideo decoder (if you change the registry).

Thats not a bad idea, not as good as proper OSD, but not too bad.

Can you point me to any information about the InterVideo registry hack?

I have an epia M9000 with a PVR250 and 256MB RAM on Windows 2000 Pro setup. I run SageTV with no problems on my 120GB hard drive works fine with the Cable so far. The only thing I haven't figured out yet is how to connect the Actsys IR sender to change channels on my DirecTV system yet. My epia M9000 is too slow for XP Media Center, but works great with this setup.

Bling, what bitrate are you recording at? What mpeg codec are you using for display? How much CPU is being used?

I'm guessing we've got different idea of what is an acceptable picture quality. Initially I thought the picture quality was acceptable through my M10000's tv out, but after seeing a much smoother (more life-like) display from the tv out on my PVR350 I have decided the picture is pretty crap.

I also get good low CPU usage with my 350's TV out. I tried you suggestion about switching between two TV inputs, but it's a little painful with my setup (receiver/TV etc) so I'm trying to use the EPIA's tv out at the moment.

I run sageTV on an EPIA M9000 with a PVR350, 512MB, Windows XP and 120GB, dont really have any problems with it all since i use the tv-out on the 350, shame i dont get an on screen display but processor usage stays around the 40% mark is i'm happy enough with (until Jeff can put an option in to disable localPlay).

I encode everything at best DVD 3.5gb/h quality.

Uhm, what's "disable local play" going to do?

(I'm a little behind the times here...)

it means you can use the tv-out on your pvr350 without the cpu being occupied with also displaying it locally on your pc. believe me, a big plus for miniITX users.

It's got problems though...I can't recommend using it at this point, and it might not be fixed for the 1.4 release. I'm talking with Hauppauge about it, it might be an issue with the driver, but I'm not sure yet.

Thanks.
