I don't know anything about that card, but if it is a software encoder, then it isn't supported for recording -- check out the list of supported hardware encoders on the SageTV System Requirements page.

Where does it specify that it does hardware encoding? I don't see it mention hardware encoding on the KWorld page for that product.

The 878 number is probably referring to the Conexant 878 chip.

"Kworld" do not sell any "hardware" encoding capture cards.
Opus4 is correct in saying that the PVR878 is referring to the BT878 chip that is used on the card. It uses software to encode not hardware.

I think he stumbled over the line that says: "Real-Time MPEG 4/2/1 Encoding" and assumed that meant it had a hardware encoder built in when in fact it really is being done with software.

I'm sure that was the case.
So many people get tricked by that statement.
I'ts a shame there is not a law against that sort of advertising.

We live and we learn I guess

Interesting indeed. Good find.
They don't make them available here in Australia, not sure why.
I'll have to ask them.

so its not hardware? well that would explain 4 hours to encode a DVD..... anyway the primary reason i got a "Tuner" was to watch TV without havingto run upstairs. Hardware Encoding was the feature that sold me on the card, and yes "Real-Time MPEG 4/2/1 Encoding" is what made me think it was Hardware. Oh well i'm not a major encode and burn kind of guy.

I'd still like to know why my card didnt show up during setup of SageTV though......the main reason for coming here

See the link I posted in my first reply, above, regarding supported tuners; this simply isn't one of them.

Some people seem to be reporting that their software encoders were recognized & they were able to use them for live TV only (no recording), but currently that is not something Frey is listing as officially supported, so I'm not entirely about what is going on there -- they used to not work at all.
