Help: Is MSI TV Tuner Card Compatible?

Can anyone tell me if I'm having a compatibility problem, ot if I'm setting things up incorrectly? I have a MSI TV@nywhere Master which uses the Conexant CX23883 audio/video decoder.

Seems it install fine, except when I get to the "Channel Setup" module, it see the available channels (Green dot to the left on the channnels), but when I try to View any of them, I get the following error msg:

Can anyone point me in the right direction on this one?

Might work for liveTV but it's not supported for recording since it doesn't have a hardware encoder.

??????

I thought a tv tuner/capture card meant It was a hardware decoder??
Card came with Intervideo software that allows me to view and record ... so you'd expect that SageTV would do the same.. You're saying that my card doesn't have hardware encoding?

Your capture card will only have a hardware encoder if it specifically says that it does. If you look at the specs for the PVR-250, you will see the statement "High quality MPEG-2 hardware compression used when recording." Hardare encoders cost more, so not everyone includes them on their product (it use to add > US$50 to the price of a capture card). Those cards without hardware encoders require that the main processor do all the work (and it is quite a bit of work). The only place where encoding is mentioned is in the "Software Features" section.

The other givaway is to look at the card itself, cards with hardware encoders will have two large chips on them (99% of the time) where non-hardware encoders don't.

The other dead givaway is if recording (without playback) uses more than 1-2% CPU.

Crap.............

I do see that in the Hardware specs of my card, they talk about a CX23883 audio/video decoder , but no mention of an encoder. Didn't realize they were seperate chips. Sigh... This mean I cannot use SageTV with this particular card?

arrrrrr..............
