Output to TV woes...

I'm at the end of my rope... I'm trying to output my video to my tv via s-vid with little success. I get a picture but at any resolution (i've tried them all) i get a border around the screen and or i get wierd distortion at the top mostly. (it's like the screen bends from corner to corner). Last night i tried ATI's HDTV Component Video Adapter, didn't work. Tried all the jumper settings but all i could get was fast scrolling of colors. figured my tv wasn't HD?

my setup::
winxp pro w/sp2
p4/3.0g with HT
ati 9800 pro 256
pvr-250
512mb ram
80gig hdd

my tv::
Philips 27" Stereo TV with Component Video Inputs and Side A/V Jacks
Model: 27PT543S
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....3&type=product

I'm using all the latest patches from m$ and am using the ati CATALYST Windows XP 4.12. It gives me more tv-output options to configure, but it still doesn't seem to fix the distortion problem...

i found a link to powerstrip shortly ago and will try tonight, but was hopng someone would have a better idea of what i'm doing wrong...

Any ideas???

You'll need to set it to 640x480 @ 30Hz to get the component adapter to work.

Did you set the dip switch to 480i (for standard TV) on the ATI dongle? Here's dongle directions:
http://www.ati.com/support/manualpdf/CmpVidAd.pdf
Yesterday I damaged my ATI dongle so had to revert to Svid. Many less resolution options like no 720x480. With both 640x480 or 800x600 had black border sides & top as you describe. Go into ATI settings, select "display" then TV and adjust. You can change size & position overscan there. FWIW, that was with an ATI 9600 128 non-pro.

BTW, I don't know if the dongle will even work on a standard TV. It's called an "ATI HDTV Component Video Adapter". You'd need to check with ATI on standard TV support, I don't own one.

IRRC 60Hz is non-interlaced, standard TV is 30Hz interlaced (alternating display lines) giving the appearance of 60Hz. I could be wrong...

(thats for NTSC, 25/50 for PAL)

I just checked out the doc on the dongle and it says it will support any component input device. After reading some more of the doc and realizing that the picture is not supposed to display until windows is loaded, i decided I'm gonna follow the instructions this time and see if i can get it to work.

I might play around with powerstrip to see if i can get my s-video cleaned up better...

i'll post my results tomorrow...

Hmmm, I have display on my Toshiba HDTV ready TV (using either dongle or Svid) immediately including POST.

I get display with s-video but not with the dongle at POST. Maybe my tv can't deal with the component input from the video card? I have a toshiba tv in the living room i might try

AFIAK, the dongle doesn't do anything until the driver is loaded in Windows.

Well, the ATI dongle has to do something before Win driver because I have display and can see what I'm doing! So it does output from the git go. I see POST and can go into BIOS or boot DOS CD and run ghost etc. no problem with output from dongle to Toshiba 55HX70. (Or atleast I could until I broke the dongle yesterday ) No Win or any other software drivers involved.

Do you have the DVI dongle, or an AIW S-Video-Component dongle?

Why even use component to that TV since it won't accept HD resolutions anyway right?

If you see a picture with s-video, then use that connection. To adjust the output so it fills your TV screen use the ATI display properties as suggested earlier:

1. Right-click on your desktop.
2. Click Properties > Settings > Advanced
3. Click "display" tab
4. select "TV"
5. select "Adjust"

It should let you use directional arrows to adjust the screen.

DVI dongle mated to 9600, but it won't be put back in use when it's returned from NewEgg RMA and ATI 9600 no long in HTPC as of a couple hours ago! (The 9600 will be going in my workstation, my workstation's ATI AIW Radeon will be going to eBay.

Because component signal better than SVid signal regardless of resolution just as Svid is better than composite.

Is it really that much of difference on an SDTV?

It's all relative. Everything is relative. It makes a difference if you can see the difference. Just as I can hear a difference between the Boston Accoustic speakers in our bedroom compared to M&K's in A/V room.
