DVD Decoders not working

This may be a NEWB question, but here goes. I have not been able to get any Decoder to work except NERO's decoder. I have tried NVDVD and InterVideo. I have not tried Sonic because I didn't want to spend any more $'s on it. When I installed the InterVideo decoders, Media Player or Sage crashes when trying to play a DVD. With NVDVD, I get no picture or audio. Maybe it is a hardware issue. Here is my hardware:
P4 3GHz
1 GB Dual Channel DDR
PVR-250
AOpen MX4000
Samsung Dual-Layer DVD Burner

Software:
Win XP SP2
Sage 2.1

Any Ideas?

TIA

most probably your video card
I would try running overlay rendering or default and not VMR9

update the drivers for the video card
and make sure you have the newest directx installed
