Running Sage as a Service
I have been trying to run sage as a service for some time. I have installed and reinstalled java and sagetv trying to get it to work, but nothing. The service seems to start up fine, but when I go to start sage so that I can watch tv it gets to the point where it says initializing sagetv and then it never gets beyond that point. Any suggestions on how to get this to work would be appreciated.
Thanks, Cugrz |

Are you running it with a -client switch? If not, do so.

You might want to check the v2.1 manual's Starting SageTV section (p. 13+) regarding using the service, if you haven't done so already. If there is a firewall, make sure the service can get through it -- not sure how much trouble that would be on the same PC, but it does talk to the client/UI that way. Make sure you don't use mapped drive letters, and if you are using UNC paths, be sure the service is logging in as a user with a password.
If it is set to use the service, the UI portion shouldn't need to use the -client parameter. But, it does use sageclient.properties for its settings. Perhaps try deleting sageclient.properties -- and perhaps even sage.properties and start all over completely. (Save backup copies first.) - Andy

Thanks for the quick responses I have found the problem
Thanks for all the suggestions, but wouldn't you know that after months of periodically trying different things on my machine to get the service to work. The minute I ask for help on this discussion board the very next thing I try works. I had been installing java's latest JRE 1.5.0 and decided to try the one that Sage originally built with, which is JRE 1.4.2. Now everything works great.
Thanks again for the suggestions, Cugrz |

Java version
I had the same problem and solved it by upgrading Java to 1.4.2_06.
I assume you mean you were running 1.4.2_05. Incidentally, before you fixed it, I'd wager that if you waited long enough, sage would have loaded. When I had my issue, when I looked at task manager I noticed that sage mem usage increased about 10k per minute. It loaded fully after 40 minutes. (I decided to see what would happen once I realized that it was actully still doing something). Now with 1.4.2_06 it loads withing a 15-20 seconds. I will resist the temptation to draw any conclusions on this limited data but anyway, food for thought for the next guy who has the problem. If not mistaken, I think many on here are using the "05" version with out trouble. Just not sure how many of them are using service. Anyway, congrats to both of us! ![]() |

I have an interesting datapoint for this problem.
I downloaded the trial of SageTV about three weeks ago. I run Win2K3 at home and I set Sage to run as a service. I had no problem at all; it worked flawlessly. When the end of the two week trial came up, I went ahead and registered SageTV and a client. Literally the same day I entered the registration code, I started getting the very same hang at "Initializing SageTV service...." Now, I did also set up the Malore STV to get some commercial-skipping joy at the same time, so this is hardly definitive, but I blew that away and it still happened with the default config, so it might be something worth checking out. It did not appear to be related to a particular version of the JRE. If I get a chance, I'll fiddle further but that could be awhile. I did notice the "slowly increasing memory" behavior described by Overclockme, but I didn't have his patience to wait 40 minutes to see if it would load. Hmm, I guess there's no reason not to try that right now. Last edited by jwheelhouse; 02-15-2005 at 03:26 PM. |
