What are the tunersourcexxxx.mpgbuf files used for?
It seems these are buffer files. After I add a tuner source, these files get created and appear to be used when I pause.
However, if I delete them, they don't show up anymore, even when I put it on pause. Are these files necessary for stability or performance? How does sageTV work without these files?

If I understand your file reference correctly, those are the files v3 uses while showing the preview playback for source configuration, Channel Setup, Color Calibration, and perhaps other areas. I believe they will be deleted when space is needed, or earlier if IR is off.
