MVP & Flashing Sage Screen

I am trying to setup my first Hauppauge MVP. I have the wireless version but I am using the wired port. I can get to the "Loading Application" screen and the series of boxes at the bottom fill up, then I get a flashing "SageTV, Please wait". On the server where I'm running Sage in service mode the log file has a bunch of "tftp timeout" and then a "retry count exceeded".

I can ping the MVP if I turn it on and go to its setup menu, but once it starts loading Sage I can't anymore.

BTW I'm using Sage 5.04.

Any ideas???

the MVP is obviously not seeing the sagetv server. Go to sagetv UI > settings > help > system information. Look for the server IP, and verify it is detecting the correct IP for the server. Also, open the log, look at the line that says "Miniserver running on" and make sure its correct IP also.

I'm pretty sure the MVP is seeing the server because when I first setup the MVP it asked if I wanted to make my Sage server the preffered connection, which I did, the IP address was correct. In the Server Log the following is recorded:

Anyways, I've got a new problem now. When I plug in the MVP I can't even get to the setup menu now, I get stuck on the "Starting Application..." screen.

from my experience, the MVP always detected the "preferred" IP correctly, but it would failt o connect nonetheless. The problem is that the SageTV miniserver is broadcasting on the wrong IP, and therefore the MVP can't connect to it. So check those settings I suggested... or not, up to you. Thats how I fixed my MVP connection problems.

There's also another thread about the DHCP detection on the MVP timing out too quickly, in which this is a router related problem.

Ok, got back into the MVP in the setup section.

I've double checked in the Sage log that the Miniserver IP is correct. As far as DHCP, the MVP is getting an IP address when I check in its setup. I'm using my Linksys BEFSX41 as my DHCP server and it is recording the MVP as getting IP address.

try the hauppauge software that came with the MVP or download it from hauppauge.com, see if it connects to that.

I setup the hauppauge software and the MVP connects great to that. I just can't believe that it would be this difficult to setup as many others do having it working, right?

do you have a firewall or use WinXP firewall? Disable all firewalls and see if it connects to SageTV. Or you can open ports for sagetv.exe and sagetvservice.exe in your firewall settings.

That was one of the first things I thought it might be, so I've tried connecting the mvp with the winxp firewall disabled. One thing I notice is that once the MVP starts loading the application I can't ping it anymore and the network card lights on it go off and don't come back on.

The mvp is Rev 2.05 and the flash&system is 1.1.38 if that helps?

The MVP changes its MAC address after it starts booting up. (I have no idea why.) Do you have MAC level authorization enabled on the router? If you do yo will have to allow the "new" MAC to connect to the network.

I don't think my router has that option, its the Linksys BEFSX41, so it should be able to connect regardless of its MAC address. What does it change its MAC address to? Is it looking to get another IP address from the DHCP server? The MVP is getting something from Sage since it loads the application and then I get the SageTV splash screen that say "Please Wait" and just flickers on and off and never gets any further.

I upgraded to sage 6 like pilot did, but now I only get to the loading application screen without getting further.

Upgrade to the beta 6 (at least try the trial).

6.0.13 has fixed my 'wait a moment' / 'loading application' problems.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I did upgrade to 6.0.13 but still had the problem. I have now fixed the problem with my router settings.

On my router there is an option for Router Information Protocol (RIP). This was not enabled. Once it was enabled and set to subnet masking (instead of multicasting). Everything worked.

So the key is make sure RIP is enabled and set to both directions (router can talk to mvp and visa versa). RIP should be set to subnet broadcasting and not multicasting (RIP version 2B and not RIP version 2M).

Multicasting can reduce the load on non-router machines because they do not listen to the RIP multicast address and will not receive the RIP packets. However, if one router uses multicasting, then all routers on your network must use multicasting.

I guess the mvP does not use multicasting.

Are you using your router as an internet gateway, or just as a switch within your local network?
