MVP Quality question

I am running STV v6 with a WINTV-MCE-500 Dual Tuner and a MVP in the bedroom hooked up to a 32" LCD TV. Everything is hardcoded to 100Mb/Full and the quality of recorded and live shows is terrible. There are shadows on all the text and just looks awful. Is there anything I can try to adjust this out?

Is it still bad if you hook the TV up to the server?
What sort of connector are you using?

I dont have a video card that supports the TV connections other than regular VGA and havent tried that.

I am using the RCA/Composite connections. I havent tried the S-video should I try that?

I have seen quite a difference in PQ between my old MVP (Rev 1) and my recently bought ones.

Generally, s-video is better than composite, but if you can't connect the tv to the server, then the signal/recording/source might be crap - you just don't know where the problem is...

I agree the input is not the absolute best, but eevn on the STV menu's the shadows occur on all the text. Also at the PC Console the channels and recordings are considered great, even at full screen.

I will try the s-video cable tonight and see if that makes a difference.

Also the MVP is a Rev. H3 if that helps any.

Can't really comment, but our MVPs have perfect picture, better than the server or client.

Well I have tried the s-video cable now and the quality is the same. Anyone have any suggestions?

I am now wondering if it is the i/o for the HDD of the computer. It is SATA but not sure if that is it or not. I am going to try putting the STV devices all on their own isolated network segment and switch.

What does the file look like if you play using something else?

Try to install the native software that came with Hauppauge MVP....try playing one of your files off it (Play a standard MPEG 2 file that requires no transcoding etc)..that should tell you if your MVP is faulty.....related to that...does your boot screen on the MVP without the LAN cable plugged in show you the shadows etc....that maybe your indicator to where the problem lies..even before installing the Hauppauge native software.

The file looks great on my 19 LCD connected directly to the PC.

I found the issue, it is with my TV. The resolution on the larger LCD is the issue. If I adjust the aspect ration on the TV I am able to make it clearer. Also just as FYI I fond out that if I hard code the duplex on the switch to "full" the MVP looses connection intermitenly and makes the video choppy.

Thanks to everyone for the responses.

you do have your recording quality set to best or great or something worthwhile, right?

how do server stored dvd's look on your mvp? all i can tell you is that as lamented to above my MVP picture is the best in the house for standard def recordings.
