Multi-channel sound for DVD playback

I was noticing that my PC claims to support 6 channel sound -- the line in and mic in connections are changed into four additional outputs when this feature is activated. I've always used the "OEM" versions of DVD player software that comes with the drives, and they only supported stereo output (but I believe they'd occasionally advertise that the full versions of, e.g., WinDVD or PowerDVD supported six channel sound).

My question, then, is... when SageTV plays back a DVD, is there a way to get it to output full six channel sound? I would imagine this would be a function of the module it uses for DVD decoding -- does anyone have a configuration where this is supported? I don't mind purchasing the full versions of DVD playback software if that's what it takes.

Thanks,
---Joel

I have a crappy old phillips sound card which can also do direct 6 channel out like yours.

To get mine to work, I had to use the setup program that came with my phillips card to do 6 channel output.

Then I had to get sage to use phillips sound agent 2 (My sound card) as the audio output device.

However I had so many problems, I used the SPDIF out and saved myself a wiring job.

Cheers
