srt subtitles (again...)

OK,- my first post
After a few months with an all-PC setup I recently brought the SageTV experience into my living room. Perfect. Almost.
I have a few avi's with matching srt subtitles files that work fine on the PC clients, but no-go on on the MediaMVP.
Is there ANY way of displaying the text on the TV without having to generate new media files with hardcoded subs?

If you convert your .srt files to .smi, you can use JREkiwi's Closed Caption Playback for Default STV import, that AFAIK, does work with the MVP.

The import only works with .smi files, but you can convert the .srt files with either srt2smi or subtitle workshop.
