Unhappy Problems when watching what's being recorded

Sometimes, when I'm watching a show as it's being recorded, I get unexpected problems...it appears as though sage loses track of time w/in the file. If I try to move 10 seconds, it will sometimes jump me minutes, and there are parts I just can't get to.

This seems to happen when my disks are full and when I'm watching the show as it airs. I might also be recording two shows at the same time.

Sage has plenty of 'intelligent' recordings it can delete for me, so space shouldn't really be a problem. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it, my girlfriend is quite sad about sage messing up her shows.

I used to get the time jump issue and stuttering when I watched LiveTV. I just used to rewind 10 seconds and all seemed fine. It mainly only happened to me when I was synced to realtime...

This problem happens to me once in a while. I have found that what causes the interruption in my recording is when something taxes the system briefly. My problem with the synching happens specifically while burning a DVD while recording shows and playing that show or a different show back at the same time. It seems that right at the moment the DVD begins recording, and when it’s finishing up the system runs under strain for just a few moments before it begins recording the actual data onto the disc or finalizing the disc. I think it’s creating the TOC or something along those lines. The brief interruption is enough to throw the recording synch off, which causes a few frames to be dropped which messes up the recording and playback ability.

My permanent fix is to be aware that I can’t try to record a DVD while recording shows. Otherwise, my system keeps up just fine (Pentium D 3.2). To fix the problem so your shows are watchable you need to get VideoReDo. It is an excellent program and worth every cent, and you can get a trial to test it. Within VRD is a QuickStreamFix that fixes the synching problem you get with recordings.

Doing QuickFix via VRD interface is a manual process where you need to be in front of you computer to do it. Do yourself a favor and download Bob Phoenix’s Video Editing plugin. It works with VRD from within Sage so you can use your remote and send the corrupt recording straight to the quickfix just similar to sending a file to the transcoder for compression. It’s a great plugin.

I don't use REW/FF--I have FF/REW configured as 60 sec jump forward and back, and FF1/REW2 configured as 30 second skip ahead and 7 second jump back, so YMMV. I have found that on rare occasion, if I am watching Live TV, it works well, but if I skip back and then jump back to live, I sometimes get stuttering. The workaround has been to simply jump back once (7 seconds) and playback resumes stutter-free. This only happens, say, 1 in 100 or so times--it's very rare for me.

Thanks for all of your replies. When this happens, we are usually 10 or 20 minutes behind live tv. It sounds a lot like the problem wrems described, only for me it happens when watching a show while recording it and another show when the disks are out of space. I guess when sage tries clearing up old shows, it bogs down the system just enough.

Thanks for the VideoReDo hint...I've had some luck doing the same sort of thing with Virtudub.

If anyone else has a way to prevent this sort of thing from happening, other than to stop taxing the system as badly, I'd really appreciate it. Perhaps sage needs some sort of intelligent TOC correction?
