Help Capturing MP4 Directly

My Plextor PX-TV402U arrived today. I got it so I can record directly in MP4. Anxious to see the quality.

So far, haven't been able to record in MP4. I set the default to MP4 High, but recording is still in .mpg.

I think it records it in an Mpeg-2 "wrapper" so it can stream to clients while still recording. Change the following line in your properties file to have it record directly to avi:
mmc/enable_mpeg4_timeshifting=false

I think you'll like the DivX Highest profile better than the MPEG-4 profiles. Get the latest free DivX decoder and set it for full processing. You'll be all set.

Same as the switch for enabling MPEG4 timeshifting in the setup --> customize menu.

Now I can't find the option to reload media player! (It's supposed to be under setup --> Audio/Video, but it isn't)

Yes. But I confess I want the MP4 for playback on AppleTV. Without hack, it's the only format it palys.

(You are running Windows, right?) That button is only available when playback is active, so if you make changes you can force them to take effect on the currently playing file. If nothing is loaded & playing, there is nothing to reload.

I see.
I recorded a bit. It says it's "encoded" in MP$ but the format is "MPEG2-PS".
So it gets saved as mpg.

One more thing, everytime I disable MPEG4 timeshifting (setup --> customize), my USB-UIRT IR blaster goes haywire (constant stream of numbers). When I enable MPEG4 timeshifting, everything is fine again.

I can capture directly as avi IF i'm not watching, i.e., only as scheduled recording.
