Getting EPG from the Satellite

The NZ EPG can be pretty unreliable despite the valiant efforts of Reven to keep up with the changes in the sources. However if you have a DVB-S card the full EPG data is there to be used. My setup is a Hauppauge PVR 350 connected to my Sky decoder and an HVR 4000 in DVB-S mode for Freeview. As the HVR4000 doesn’t work in SageTV (at the moment) I’d been using DVBDream as a network encoder but when I realized the EPG was there for all the channels I looked into how I could get the EPG off the satellite and into SageTV. I had to swap to MyTheater, which requires a fee and registration and apparently uses more CPU but I now have reliable EPG. Its not clear whether SageTV can get its EPG from the DVB source when fully integrated so once Qian gets the HVR4000 working with SageTV this approach could become redundant, but in the meantime I’ve written it up. (It doesn't need an HVR4000 any of the DVB-S cards supported by MyTheatre will do.)

I think I can quite safely say that SageTV will be able to get it's EPG from the satellite with an HVR-4000

Just in case you haven't got around to it. Here's a PredefinedDVBS.frq that has 2 selections for NZ
Optus D1 which will scan all transponders
Optus D1 Freeview will only scan the Freeview transponders

You need to restart SageTV to pickup the changes

It does not quite get all of the channels, but this one does. There are a couple of 0 results in here but I haven't worked out which yet

If you're after a New Zealand TVGuide, check out http://djkxml.oztheory.com download and run the "djkxml config" to enable SageTV format.
