Yeah! It's here!

Santa came early! When I got home today UPS had delivered my HD Extender. Up and running in less than 15min. Works great so far. Plays R5000 H.264 files better than I could ever get my PC to. HD is clearer and more vibrant colors as well.

One thing however, I've always used full clients until now. I can't seem to find anywhere in the manual or on the forums how to set up VIDEOS correctly. I'm using UNC paths; I can see my directory structure (just like on the server or other clients) but no cover art pictures and when I try and play... nothing. It's like it can't see the directory.

I thought the extenders servered the VIDEOS through the server so used server permissions for the directories. I'm connecting to a WHS share (not managed drive but stand alone) with no love. Even added the dreaded "everyone" with read access but still nothing. Anyone got any suggestions? I know I'll kick myself for the obvious when someone chimes in but for the life of me I can't seem to get it to work tonight. Maybe it's the giddy excitement of a good solid picture.

Side Note: Only problem I've seen with the extender so far is the remote response time isn't the best. I plan on setting up my Harmony later in the week when I have more time so I'm hoping it will get better when I do.

If the server can see it, the Extender should play it. Do your import show up on the server?

yep. I can see my icons (however, no pictures) where the files are. Shows up the same as when my file server is down. Structure is there but no details.

fixed!

OK, I said I'd be kicking myself. When I hooked up tonight I was replacing my main server which I also used for playback on my living rm TV. In my infinite wisdom I decided it was time to switch to service mode which I hadn't been using because the GUI always needed to be up... long story short, I didn't set up the service with a proper logon account to use. Fixed and now all is well... time to go watch some more TV

I don't know how relevant this is to your situation but I use .smi files with JREKiwi's caption playback import and it works with the HD extender.

so can u check srt file?
just get a movie, a subtitle file for it
name it the same (just the extention srt)
and run it on the extender (no smi file)

if u could tell me if that works, that would be a gr8 help

SRT is just another subtitle format. It is a text file with timecodes in it and the text to display from x time to x time.

Sample
Code:
4
00:00:27,560 --> 00:00:33,897
Scattered planets at the farthest end
of the universe

5
00:00:34,034 --> 00:00:40,564
Calling out to his father
in the gleaming galaxy

6
00:00:40,707 --> 00:00:47,306
See the tears of the shooting stars

I get that...I was asking if the default STV or the core handles srt files or if he wants me to test with an import. I should have been a little more clear.

Well, if you use ffdshow, there is a tick there named subtitles, which when it encounters an srt file of the same name, it will show the subtitles.

In standalone players (DVD,Streamers), the software which runs them also knows how to handle subtitles from text files (with various results).

This has nothing to do with the stv in sage, if the movie is decoded on the extender it stands to reason that it should know how to decode and display the subtitles (even a 30$ divx dvd knows how to do this).

I am asking if this is present in the extender, and the only way to find out, is to check it.

Is it known whether it supports SRT files that are present as part of a container? Many mpeg4-ish containers support a text portion of their container where you can mux in the SRT/ASS/SMI file - it is then up to the playback software to detect and render it. I do this with all of the files that produce (I tend to use MKV(x264/ogg/srt)).

I'll test it out later. I have a feeling it will not work. But you can get pretty much the same functionality by using JREkiwi's caption playback STVi import and convert your srt files to smi files.

Cool. This is one of the things that I'm afraid to loose with replacing my PC client. I have it setup right now to use DirectShow instead so that I use the external ffdshow instead of the Sage mplayer (old).

Admittedly, I do tend to watch more full DVDs now, and it shouldn't have a problem with those subtitles.

since you guys are messing around with subtitles, does the options pop-up let you adjust captions settings for embedded captions from either a digital recording or from a Hauppauge analog recording

The extender does DVD subtitles just fine.

I actually sent a request into Sage recently asking if support for embedded subtitles / multiple audio tracks for MKV/OGM files would be added in the future and this is the response I got:

"It's on our list to implement in a future version. (shouldn't be that far
off)"

OK so I put an srt file with the matching name in my imported videos and played back the movie on the HD extender and wasn't able to view subs with the base STV.
