XP Service Pack 3

Anyone updated to XP SP3? Anyone having any problems with the update? Looked through most of the forums, but nobody is talking about it.

EDIT: Note I was answering the wrong question. My answer below was directed towards Vista SP1 and not XP SP3.....

I'm not one to jump for the latest MS release unless there's a real need. I'd rather let someone else experience er test MS's latest updates. It's not ready for the masses yet and in fact in its current state breaks programs. Here's an article from CNET outlining some of the current issues.

Bottom line. I'd wait for a few hundred patches to SP1 before trying it.

You're talking about Vista SP1 not XP SP3. Are you on the right page?

Nope. My bad.

some details on XP SP3 here http://blogs.computerworld.com/xp_sp...e_underwhelmed

I still wouldn't update to it unless I had a need though.

I've run it on a Sage client with no issues and slightly better performance. I ran the release client. I would wait until the actual final release before upgrading though. (I ran this on my test system.)

Considering the fact that the article isn't outline issues (just curious if you read the article, you'd have known it was incompatibilities with specific programs), it's talking about specific programs that don't work with Vista SP1 (and I would bet by now those programs have been updated by their respective companies, if not then blame the real culprit here, the vendor of the broken program).

As of right now, if you're running Vista & Sage, with a MVP, SP1 IS a needed update. Fixes all the problems that people have had with the MVP's having issues in Vista.

There have been a few reports of issues installing the SP, I BELIEVE it was on x64 version, can't remember though, but also remember it's not been officially released yet on Windows Update, so that will most likely change between now and then...

And that last line reads just like the opinions when Vista was released "Don't get Vista now, wait till SP1 then I'll upgrade"... Well, SP1's here now, so the 'wait till there's been a couple hundred updates to it' I guess is the new justification for not moving forward.

To get back on topic, I have a couple XP machines with the current SP3 incarnation on them, and it did nothing harmful, and I actually get a bit better performance on those machines.

Wow. I did read the article and yes I did see it was talking about incompatibilities with specific programs (I'll confess it was a bad choice of words to say "breaks programs". I'm assuming you didn't read my note mentioning I misread the original post (you'll find it in the post you quoted as well as a correction in post#4)....

Regardless I wasn't saying the blame was on anyone. Here's my philosophy on Operating system updates for HTPC's: If it's working and I don't have a need for an update, I'm probably not going to update - especially right after it comes out. Why? Because I don't want to be the one to test to see if the various hardware and software I have on my PC works perfectly with the update or new operating system. If I had Vista and a MVP and I knew it fixed a problem I had, then yes I'd probably do it. My point was don't update unless you have a specific need - wait until that update has been worked out by a few others.

I still use XP on all of my PC's because it works just fine for my needs and I don't see the need for the hassle and bloat. I should have mentioned it before, but these are only my opinions so feel free to disagree
