HD Extender: can you leave it on, or should you turn it off?
I used to leave my client computer on 24/7, 365 days (if you include BTV Link usage into that ). Can I do the same thing with the extender, or should I press the power button after I am done using it, or is it fine to leave it on all the time like a client computer or STB?
Thanks

Pressing power on the HD100 remote puts it into standby mode which is the way to go, imo. But, I suppose there's nothing wrong with leaving it on all the time as well.

I was wondering the same thing. It seems to me that the HD100 is still powered on whether it's in stand by or the power button is selected.

That's right. The only way to really power it down is with the power switch on the back. Otherwise, the power button puts in a sleep mode so that when you want to access it, Sage is immediately available as opposed to waiting for the boot up sequence.

I power it down so I it frees up the license.

My son would repeatedly turn off the TV and leave the HD100 still streaming data! I don't think this is a good idea.

My extender pulls 6 watts whether it's on or in standby so power consumption isn't an issue. Freeing up the license or making sure the kids or wife don't leave it on with it streaming data are the only reasons I can really think of to hit the power button.
I typically leave mine on, but occasionally put it in standby. |

I power mine off, so the server can go to sleep, it reconnects rather quickly.

So does Standby mode also free up the license (or is this what you meant by power down)?

If you use the power button on the front of the HD100 or on the remote, that puts the unit into soft power-off mode, which does free its license on the server. - Andy

Thanks Andy. I did mean by using the remote power button.

Really? This seems odd to me. I know that's low power to begin with, but I would think that it would go into a further power saving mode and drain nearly nothing when in standby, simply listening for a remote signal. Especially when comparing it to when it's processing HD content?

My Time Warner cable box uses the same amount of power when turned on or off, I think this is typical now, hence why countries like the UK have laws to force real 'power off' modes in order to save energy.

lil red light
Thread Hijack
Does the red light on the front of the unit stay on for everyone else when you put your unit into "soft power off"? I would have assumed the like the media mvp, the light would go out when you do this, but the power light only goes out for me when I use the power switch on the back of the unit. Thanks, Nick |

I also confirmed via my Kill-a-Watt that in standby (off) it consumes 5 watts. When powered on it's about 6 watts and when viewing a video it's either 6 or 7 watts.
I'm sure if I overclocked it while playing a 1080p video, I could push this puppy to 8.25 watts. 'Might need to water cool it though. Robert |
