MVP and MKV Files

I checked through the forums and there were older (1+ year old) posts but nothing in a while that I could find.

With the use of the HD100 as our primary client and the introduction of our new server (specs are below) I was looking to move our 2 MVP's to my kids rooms. The problem I am having is I have a lot of movies that I have encoded to X.264/AC3 in a MKV container, and of course they are for the most part the kids movies. I just couldn't take having to clean the DVD's on a daily basis!

I am getting mixed results from the MVP:
  • Plays ok but no ff/rew/jumping within the movie
  • Audio but no video
  • Nothing at all - blank and quiet.
With the new server CPU utilization never goes about 25% when watching a movie on the MVP, I am guessing it is only using a single CPU core for the transcoding.

I would hate to have to convert the MKV to something else if I can help it.

Suggestions? Should the MVP even be able to play these movies transcoded?

I am looking at the possibility of replacing one of the MVP's with a HD100 but I will probably have trouble getting the purchase through the budgetary approval process - my wife.

Thanks!

What program did you use to create the MKV files? I ask because Handbrake does not create correct MKV files and causes SageTV to jump back to the beginning when you hit FF or REW. You need to re-mux the files with mkvmerge so that it will add the proper cue table to the file. Also, particularly if your videos are anamorphic, you need to add this to the command line when you re-mux so that mkvmerge will keep the stream AR data:

--engage keep_bitstream_ar_info

MKVmerge strips it out by default.
