Will this work?

Im looking to get the SageTV media Extender to playback full 1080p movies. Now this is my setup. I have a Dell server that has windows 2003 installed and vmware server. I see that Sagetv can not be installed on a win2k3 box so I also have a Xp virtual machine running. Now will it be ok to install sagetv on that virtual machine. The server dose not have a sound card but I can add one if I need to. It has 2 dual core 1.6 xeon chips in it. Will this work. I know the computer right now cant run full HD but im thinking the sage media extender will? Please let me know what you all think.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not confident about 1080p movie streaming from a VM, but it might work. Pushing packets through to VMs takes a bit of CPU, but you've got 4 cores so load can be shared nicely. If you've got another machine you could run the sage client on, give it a try and see if it works OK.

When I was evaluating Sage I used VMWare to host an XP VM w/ Sage, and it worked fine with SD and DVD content. I didn't try any HD at that point though.

I can't speak for your computer's ability to run Sage (the first portion of your post), but I can tell you that you can watch HD on an HD Extender using a server PC that can't show HD content. My server is not close - if I accidentally try to watch HD content on it, it crashes hard - but I can watch HD on my Extenders perfectly.
