Question Confused- Questions about HD100

Hello all-

I hope I am not "bugging" this thread. I tried to do search and it really didnt help me finding the answer. Hopeful you guys can help me answer-

1) Who does the encoding? The Server (PC) or the Extender? (I wanted to make sure it will not be a CPU hog on my PC)
2) Why do I need a license for SageTV Server on PC? Can I just run files (DivX/H264) off over the network from a windows share? Is SageTV Server mean for TV feature over the network?
3) If I decided to do TV over the network, I may would end up getting HDhomerun and SageTVServer for XP, but because I am hearing impaired, Closed Captioned is a must. I have read the FAQ, but it seems its aiming on recording, will the CC work on the fly when watching TV? or do it have to be recorded in order to see CC (thats where im most confused at)
4) Does the license for SageTV Server cover future upgrade? like 6.3 -> 6.4?

Thanks in advance for answering those questions.

Decoding is done on the HD Extender

This extender is designed to work with SageTV's server. There isn't direct file access built in.

I am under the impression the HDHomerun is not capable of CC. However, the newly released HD-PVR from Hauppauge captures whatever is output from the component ports on your Sat/Cable box. So if CC is turned on, it is on in the image being captured.

The license covers upgrades to minor versions ie. 6.3 to 6.4 but does not cover major version upgrades ie 6 to 7.

Thanks for answering all of my question. CC is pretty different, its-- how do I say-- let's say the TV need to have the chip to display the CC- no chip, no CC. It is just not hard coded on the image, just on the different frequency/channel where the chip can detect and display.

Example of the thread that show HDHR can stream CC info:
http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?p=280802

I know theres an "add-on" for extender at http://forums.sage.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=23752

but that add-on sounded as if its only for recorded file, I do not see anything on "on-the-fly" live tv. There are several mention of it but not enough to make sure it does.

If you use the HD-PVR, the chip is in the cable box and not the TV so you get "live" decoding of CCs. Of course nothing is live, it is all buffered to disk first. If you don't use the HD-PVR, you'll have to scan for CCs on the computer. I know that Erik's Comskip program recently added CC as well as commercial detection. You may want to ask him if his program can write the CC files live or if it has to wait for the file to finish.

PS - I assume we're focusing on HD television as you mentioned the HDHomerun
