DVD Decoder with Ripped DVDs?

Hi,

I was of the understanding that Sage should be able to play DVD's without encryption without the need of 3rd party DVD decoders? I have ripped a DVD (I legally own) with AnyDVD and CloneDVD, and thus it should not have any encryption on it, yet Sage cannot play it. I get a variety of errors like the directx one and the video content could not be rendered etc.

What is the deal here? If these dvds wont work in sage, they won't work on the HD100 extender i'm potentially planning on buying either will they?

I can't speak for the free Sage Decoders, but the STX-100 has no issues playing back unencrypted DVD's regardless of what encoders you have installed on your Sage Server.

I am by no means an expert. I am sure someone better than I will be around to answer, but I am not sure where you got the no need for 3rd party DVD decoder unless it is in reference to the extender as evilpenguin mentions. To play it back on the PC it is my understanding that you do indeed need a DVD decoder such as Nvidia's Purevideo. However, again, as evilpenguin states, if you are looking to play it via an extender, no decoder is needed as I believe the extender has the decoding built into the hardware.

I thought that if the DVD was unencrypted that Sage's own decoders were supposed to be able to handle it? And you only needed 3rd party decoders for unencrypted DVDs?

I just played two different DVD's on my hard drive using the Sage decoder just to make sure. If there is no CSS encryption then all an mpeg decoder needs is an understanding of DVD file structure (VOBs, IFOs, etc.) and the Sage decoder has that.
