HD Extender over wireless connection Some HD success

I have an Extender in an in-lay style separate building from our house.

Used to be a mediamvp, which worked great because server would transcode to fit mediamvps abilities which took bit-rate down to what my Wireless G bridge setup could handle.

Then added HD-PVR and blu-ray rips and mvp was no good anymore. So, put in an extender and those last two items still wouldn't play, now becuase of bandwidth limitations of my G setup.

So, last night I replaced my G bridge setup (using dd-wrt replacement firmware in buffalo routers) for a draft N bridge setup (again using dd-wrt firmware in a pair of Linksys WRT310 routers that have gig lan ports which I got for a great price here h**p://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=206462229) and I got a lot of what I wanted.

Low bit rate blu-ray rips will play and more importantly hd-pvr recordings now play great. High bit-rate blu-rays still stutter some, but I'm hoping that as I play with firmware settings and radio positions that I may be able to get that to go away.

Pretty happy with this solution.

I'm trying to decide between getting the 5Ghz wireless n bridge kit that Netgear sells, and just getting a second WRT150N router that operates at 2.4GHz. I'm concerned that too much interference in the 2.4GHz range would dramatically reduce performance. Do you have a lot of other wireless b/g/n traffic in your area?

Not sure what constitutes a lot.

We definitely have some, but I'd say an average to slightly below average amount (at a guess) for a regular middle class neighborhood in the bay area.

Thanks

You may want to look into using a directional antenna on the out-building, aimed at the router. This would provide a stronger signal, and eliminate some interference.

I'm also having pretty good luck with HD over wireless-n. I'm using a Dlink DIR-655 router (which I absolutely love...it's rock solid) and Linksys wireless-n gaming adapters (which I love less...they were a giant pain to configure). I can run one stream at a time. If two TVs are running, one of them will usually stutter. If I run the microwave, I also get some stutter.

All-in-all this works pretty well, but it's not perfect. I've been trying to order a Dlink DAP-1522 to replace the Linksys units for sometime. They've been back-ordered just about everywhere for months. They finally showed up on amazon this weekend, so I ordered one to try out. I'll let you know how it performs.

BTW, I also tried a Linksys WRT600N Dual Band Wireless-n router and I could never get it to work with the Linksys game adapters. Go figure. I was hoping the 5GHz band would be less prone to interference, but the signal was so weak that I couldn't get wireless to transmit even a couple of rooms away. The Dlink performed WAY better.

I really want to go wired and get it over with, but it's going to be painful due to our house configuration, so I've been putting it off. For now, the wireless works good enough and the WAF is pretty good, so I'm not going to mess with it.
