VGA out support on the HD Extender

Hi,

This is really a follow on from my issue in this thread;

But I thought it might be more useful to others in another thread.

Anyway, it appears that when outputting to Plasma's and LCD's which are not 1920x1080 there can be some issues using Component and HDMI where the devices do not accept there native resolutions, but only the standard ones of 1080 and 720. This happens where TV's operate in resolution such as 1366x768 and 1024x768 and so on.

The HD Extender can be configured to use custom resolutions such as 1360x768, even though these can't alwasy be fed into the TV's HDMI, since the TV does not support it.

Question: Can you just use an HDMI->DVI adapter and then a DVI->VGA adapter to get a full 1:1 pixel output in VGA?

Would this give a pure VGA out as if the extender had VGA out?

No, because the DVI-VGA adapters are DVI-A (even if they have a DVI-I plug) to VGA, while HDMI-DVI adapters are DVI-D. You need a device that will accept DVI-D/HDMI and convert it to analog RGB, I think the cheapest thing I found was the HD Fury (I'd hold out for the HD Fury2 though).

That said, with how the HD extender works, I wouldn't even bother, 1:1 pixel mapping on the extender doesn't mean much like it does on a PC, I'd probably just stick with 1080i output or native output switching.

I've been reading your other thread. You have marketing to thank for the resolution of your TV. Rather than actually making 1280x720 panels like they should have someone decided it would be better to put as many pixels up as the display hardware can handle. As a result even though you have a "720p" display all video content must be scaled to fit the panel. Even 720p. As a result no video will look sharp. This is the very reason why nobody should even consider a 720p panel unless you're strapped for cash or just don't care. At least with 1080p panels you get at least one resolution that's not scaled. But the rest should look pretty sharp.
