License Confusion

Hi All,

I am a bit confused with how many and which type of licenses i have.

I have purchased (separately):
- STVSMB - SageTV Dual-Tunel Bundle
- STVPCL - Placeshifter License
- STX-HD100 - HD Media Extender.

I received the following licenses:
- a 'SageTV License Key' (which i think is to run the media center)
- a 'SageTV Media Extender License Key' (i assume this is the placeshifter license)
- another SageTV Media Extender License key ( i think this one came with the HD extender).

I have SageTV Media Center installed on my server and was watching it there via the SageTV Client as well. Now the server i going into the basement and I have a different PC that i want to watch from.

If i understand correctly SageTV client does not require a license if run on the same machine as the server but does if run from a different PC right?

Is there any difference/benefits to SageTV Client vs SageTV placeshifter. I have essentially an unused Placeshifter license. I don't want to do the wife to have to do the 'Connect and Login' stuff when she just wants to watch TV in the kitchen.

Can i start/invoke SageTV Placeshifter with some command line options to connect to the server immediatly? Seems like even with placeshifter if you connect via LAN no login is required. Still, selecting the server from the list is annoying and will drop the WAF.

Do 32 bit/64 bit make any difference? The PC in the kitchen is a 64 bit HP Touchsmart (22" Touchscreen PC).

Any suggestions are welcome.

The UI you run on the server machine is not the same as SageTVClient. It's the Media Center software running in interactive mode. SageTVClient is a separate product (purchased separately) for use on PC clients within a LAN. It's licensed separately from both the Media Center product and the Placeshifter/Extender products, i.e. you cannot use a Placeshifter license with SageTVClient.

If you prefer, you can use Placeshifter on your LAN instead of SageTVClient. You'll have fewer options for configuring codecs and such when using Placeshifter. When connecting directly via LAN, Placeshifter does not require a login password, but just goes directly to the Main Menu.

For a detailed comparison of Placeshifter v. Client, see this FAQ.

Thanks...

I still seems that Placeshifter first pops up the window that asks which server to connect to...if I could bypass that possibly through a command line string or something that woudl be great...

cd \Program Files\SageTV\Placeshifter
java -cp MiniClient.jar;jogl.jar;gluegen-rt.jar sage.miniclient.MiniClient server

Use the server's internal LAN IP or computername, not its external WAN IP or Locator ID.

Awesome...that partly worked...

I see 2 problems:

- The Command line enivronment stays open...is this some sort of debugging window? Can it be closed?
- When exiting Placeshifter an error occurs

Other than that it's great.

Make a batch file out of it, create a shortcut to the batch file, and set the shortcut properties to start the window minimized. The console window should close when Placeshifter exits.

I do this all the time without errors. What error specifically are you getting?

Can you execute the java command via start and have a prompt returned?

Code:
cd \Program Files\SageTV\Placeshifter
start java -cp MiniClient.jar;jogl.jar;gluegen-rt.jar sage.miniclient.MiniClient server
