Family want me to remove my Extender!
Ever had one of those weeks where you can’t please all in your family?
I recently got myself an extender on eBay so I could have the Sage server upstairs for when I want to work on it. Well of course that meant Netflix was no longer downstairs. I have not been able to get the ‘Netflix on Extender’ mod done and not sure if I want to as it is not as friendly as the standard Netflix option. My plan was to get a Roku player to sit on Extender..… NO Dad, NO More Bits! Family (wife with kids agreeing this close to Christmas) is telling me to put it back how it was. So I may be over-ruled on this one and have to go back to server downstairs with the TV. Any suggestions before I revert to the old way, and offer my extender up to eBay? |

First of all, do the netflix on extender mod - it works just fine. I know my kids can't live without it since they are constantly watching episodes of the The Office.
And/or get a quality universal/programmable remote (e.g. Harmony One, Universal Remote). A quality programmable remote will also make a separate Roku player disappear into the background if you decide to go that route. I would also do some SageMC magic - the new nBlue theme is pretty slick and throw in some fancy backgrounds - and tell them it's only available with the extender. Mitch |

Use this as an exercise to show your family why DRM content is evil and that you need to take a stand against the corporation and cancel your netflix account in protest.....
Or maybe just put things back the way they were

If you have the money, and don't want to add any more "devices" to your arsenal, then get the Samsung BD-P2550 from Best Buy. It'll cover your Netflix, Pandora, DVD and Blu-ray (present or future) needs. Assuming you already have a DVD player, this can replace it. It's upconversion of DVD and presumably Netflix movies will be much better than any current method considering it's Silicon Optix HQV processor. It'll also be ready for Netflix HD when they start that.

Valnar,
I did look at a new DVD player with Netflix, but our speaker system is part of current DVD/radio tuner etc. Have not yet found a entertainment system to replace it all. Currently looking at Mitch G option to add Roku as I have a Harmony remote and can make it fairly painless for the family. Would have been nice if Sage had come out with a unit to play DVDs, be an extender and show protected content from Netflix etc.... But I guess we just got a smaller Extender100..... one day. Thanks Kevin |
