Question MVP Transcoder, Server maxed out

I have a MVP client running on a P4 2ghz server.

When I playback an MPEG4 (xvid, divx...) the transcoder service runs near 100% CPU, drops frames and shudders.

From the posts I've found on here it looks like it is possible to change the quality of the transcoder, but I can't find any real clear info on how to do it.

Can anyone help?

- Greg

Go into Detailed Setup-Server-Media Extender Conversion Quality. But good luck with transcoding on a P4 2Ghz server. I would consider that underpowered for that process.

Thanks Gerry

I had forgotten about that setting, it was on High, so I'll try tonight and see if the server can keep up now.

Is there any way to offload the transcoding to another machine on the network? My Sage server is a P4 2.8 and can't keep up well, but I do have a new Quad core machine that could do it. I just don't want to rebuild Sage on the quad core to make that the server.

Rebuild. Do it. You'll be happier in the end if you're doing transcoding to a MVP. Or the other option is replace the MVP with a HD200. The only time the server transcode is when a client tries to play a file type not native to it. The only file type native to a MVP is mpg2. The HD200 plays just about everything so doesn't have to transcode.

Yeah, I have the HD200 for the living room and it is great. This is for a spare guest room so I don't want to foot another $200 right now since I have the MVP. The MVP is OK for SD content but it is dying under the pressure of HD stuff when it transcodes.
