Question Closed Caption with HVR-1800??

I am unable to get Closed Captions on my Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1800 cards recording from a SD source. I have a PVR-500 with extra AV card and "both" inputs capture/display Closed Captions. I am capturing SD from cable on all 4 tuners. It sounds like HVR-1800 ATSC/QAM and CC works, but I've found mixed reports in the forums that CC works or doesn't work with HVR-1800 (and HVR-1600) I'm only interested in SD (cable tuner or SVideo/RCA) When I run mpg2srt (v0.3), there is no CC data in the mpgs captured from the HVR-1800, but there is in the PVR-500 mpgs.

I've enable all related items I can find in the SageTV properties file:
captions_enable = true
captions_embedded_enable = true
cc_option_enabled = true

My recording quality is: BEST

I am running:
SageTV V6.4.8.184
JAVA version: 1.6.0.11
SageMC STV Version: 6.3.8a
SageMC.jar Version: 6.3.8
df_sageutil.jar Verison: 2.2

Hauppauge HVR-1800 driver:
09/08/2008 - 1.31.26252.0

Hauppauge PVR-500 driver:
02/06/2007 - 2.0.48.25037

Not sure if any of these settings will help, but here's what I've got. (Blue is current setting) I know VMR9 was the key to getting it to work on the PVR-500.

Video/Audio Settings
- Video Render
- Default Renderer
- Video Overlay Renderer
X DirectX9 Video Mixing Renderer (VMR9)
- MPEG2 Video Decoder Filter
X Default
- Cyberlink Video/SP Decoder
- SageTV MPEG Video Decoder
- MPEG4 Playback
X DirectShow
- SageTV Player
- Audio Renderer
X Default
- Cyberlink Audio Renderer
- Default DirectSound Device Renderer
- Default WaveOut Device Renderer
- DirectSound Realtek HD Audio Output
- MPEG2 Audio Decoder
X Default
- AC3 Filter
- Cyberlink Audio Decoder
- MPEG Audio Decoder
- SageTV MPEG Audio Decoder

If anyone has gotten Closed Caption to work with the HVR-1800 and a SD source, let me know what settings you are using or any other tips you might have to get mine working.

Well, Hauppauge has never gotten back to me about this. This forum post has also been surprisingly silent. Not a good sign.
Here's my own solution... I replaced the two HVR-1800s with a second PVR-500 with extra A/V cable.
It works great, as does the other PVR-500, and now all 4 inputs capture CC. I'm only using SD, so it's not much different than the two HVR-1800s. I won't need HD for a while. (probably when HD is the new SD and 4K is the new HD)

Wow, never knew about HPquality.txt
I had to dig for that one. So the recording quality set to BEST doesn't help?

Where exactly do I put the outputstreamtype=10?

I don't have any:
mmc/python2_encoding/

I've got:
mmc/encoders/

should I write it as:
mmc/encoders/815125389/outputstreamtype=10

Also, I saw the audiobitrate value. I tried setting it to 192 for the PVR-500s:
mmc/encoders/551195576/audiobitrate=192

It didn't work, so I'm guessing the outputsteamtype set up this way wouldn't either.

Before I re-add the 1800 and get a bunch of extra lines in the sage.properties, could you explain the solution a bit further?
Thanks

I do not know whether the HVR-1800 records CC in a format SageTV can use (only certain Hauppauge tuners do so & that one isn't on my list right now), but any analog tuner recording quality setting in Detailed setup -> Multimedia -> Recording Quality which says it is a DVD format already has the outputstreamtype=10 setting. (See Appendix K of the SageTV PDF manual for more CC info.)

BTW: there are custom recording quality examples in this FAQ:
SageTV only has a few recording qualities available, and I want to add more, is that even possible?

I thought that was the case. All of my capture devices are set to "Best" which is a DVD format (MPG2/720x480/6mbps video/384kbps audio)
Just to make sure, I added the line:
mmc/python2_encoding/Best=outputstreamtype=10|audiobitrate=192
(I left the other settings to their default values)

This changes the audio bitrate recording on all to 192kbps like I wanted.
All of the HVR-500 inputs still capture and display CC.
The HVR-1800 still does not display CC nor does the MPG contain any data to extract a smi and srt file.

I'm fairly convinced that the HVR-1800 cannot capture Closed Caption.

Side note: I see I'll also have to add, videobitrate=6000. That was the previous "Best" default, but when the mmc/python2_encoding/Best= line is added, the video bitrate is changed to the 4000kbps default.

Good luck. I emailed Hauppauge almost 3 weeks ago and never got a reply. Let me know if you get any response.

Thanks for checking. I must have the latest "not-so-greatest" drivers installed:
09/08/2008 - 1.31.26252.0 (4.6A install)
My old install CD is MIA. Is there a site that has the older Hauppauge driver revs that I could download and test too? I can't find any good sites that do.
I've read other forums/posts that try different drivers that improve analog quality but kill the ATSC/QAM input or vice versa. Fortunately, I'm only interested in the good quality Analog with CC, but some may need all 3. I guess I'd just settle for a definitive answer about Closed Caption support.
Thanks again for the hard work. Keep us posted.
