Possible to change Closed Caption fonts or background?

I've been using SageTV for several months now and have closed caption enabled via SageTV properties files.

Closed Caption is a nice looking white rich text with a transparenty background but sometime if the tv show happen to have a white background it make the closed caption nearly invisable so I was wondering if there was a way to darken the transparenty background or make the closed caption font bolder?

I am using VMR9 render and I had tried a regular overlay which give a soild black background with white text but there seem to be an issue where video get locked up or go out of sync using regular overlay during comskip beside I like the transparently very much but just need to make it a bit more darker is all.

I also tried the Closed Caption plugin which works good but it requires me to run another applciation to create a smi file for subtitles which I wish to avoid as well too.

Is there a way to adjust the darken of the background for closed caption? via properties files? or the fonts itself to make it bolder?
