Sudden stuttering in Sage Server on WHS to HD100

I've no idea if this is applicable to anybody else. However my install of Sage on WHS using HD100 clients started stuttering this morning.

A quick swap out of parts ruled out a dodgy HD100 but did reveal that Sage had suddenly become extremely intolerant of network imperfections (stuttering was much less over a direct Gigabit ethernet connection, unwatchable using a NIM100 bridge - which offers around 40Mbits).

Checking on the server I noticed that large file transfers had suddenly become very erratic in speed off and onto the server.

Switching "virtual machine network services" off in local area connection properties has restored all to normal.

I hadnt noticed this option before, but then I hadn't been looking so I don't know if it arrived with an WHS automatic update. However if you've suddenly got this issue or your network in general seems a bit jittery give it a go.

MS did release an update (KB958926) for WHS recently (mine updated on Jan 28). It dealt with fixing some issues when WHS would check the computer backups for abnormalities.

While I doubt that it would've caused your problem, you could always roll it back and see it the symptoms disappear.

I had sudden stuttering issues on my setup (WHS, HD100, HDHR and HD-PVR) after a year+ of no problems.

It's not at all related to your experience, but for the sake of people doing searches, I'll throw this in.

Several people suggested a signal strength issue and I was doubtful (why would I suddenly have that problem after so long), but I called the cableco out and sure enough, it was a signal issue that the tech solved in 15 minutes.

I wish I had listened to the smart users who suggested that the first time--it would have saved me a lot of needless troubleshooting.
