Latest pre-release SageMC 6.3.9a-7 issues

In My Videos, the scrolling speed for my dvds has taken a hit from 6.3.9. I have no plugins loaded. I have approx. 400 ripped DVDs and in 6.3.9 the scrolling was almost instantaneous. (I have the User Input Timeout before loading Thumbnails at 1 ms) Now with loading up 6.3.9a-7 the scrolling speed is 3-5x slower. I press the down arrow it will take 2-3 seconds to move. Previously it would scroll before counting to 1. I have mine set for two rows of icons and page down will take 4-5 seconds before it starts to scroll. Again, previously it was instantaneous.

This slowdown is also at the Main Menu. When I first choose My Videos it will take 4-5 seconds before it even begins to switch screens. Prior version was instantaneous.

When I load the previous 6.3.9 all menu and scrolling actions happen immediately.

This is from a HD200 Extender. No coverart cycling. I'll confirm if the same performance issue is at a PC client.

Gerry

EDIT: PC client is not as bad but can still seem slow in some instances.

I'm not running SageMC, just the default STV w Dynamic Menus and Sage Pro.

I have noticed the same slowness on the HD200 with and without Dynamic Menus and Sage Pro. Sometimes it takes 40 seconds or so (after reaching the SageTV main menu) for the HD200 to respond to navigation commands (ie up, down, enter). This is true on all three of my HD200s.

EDIT: This is with the new HD200 20090403 0 firmware and SageTV 6.5.13 beta.

Don't know if this is the same issue, but just sitting on the video browser the sageclient process is maxing a core (dual core) on my client.

I was having the same problem with 6.3.9, it wasn't there in 6.3.8x12.

This maybe of use or it may not but I found that reducing the size of my images helped quite a bit in loading these screens.

If your using Seans beta BMT tool then you can set the properties to force the image to resize. I have mine set to a width of 350 for posters and 1280 for backgrounds. Which is why I asked about displaying those extra details for windows folders in a previous thread

Good thought-except for one thing. Without adjusting those settings I can switch between 6.3.9a and 6.3.9a_7 and notice the performance difference. I'll give that a try because there may be a change that makes it more sensitive to the image size. I'll also check to see if I disable fanart is the issue still there.

(Helen-I'll check the default to see if I'm having those issue also. Are you doing any fanart with tiki's plugin?)

Gerry
The only thing I've added to the default install is Dynamic Menus and Sage Pro. Nothing else at all. I have two Sage servers and on one I did a clean install, on the other I installed over 6.5.12. Both are giving me the same issues.

I installed the HD200 firmware update (0403) the day before I installed the 6.5.13 and didn't notice the slowness issue, only the caption issue with the 6.5.12.

I am just about to roll back one server to 6.5.12 and see if that rectifies the HD200 slowness.

EDIT: Ok, rolled one server back to 6.5.12 and the HD200s responsiveness (with 20090403 0 firmware) is back to normal. With both default STV and default STV w Dynamic Menus & Sage Pro. IMO, the issue has to do with SageTV 6.5.13 beta.

Well I have 6.5.13 on the server and clients. HD200 with the 20090403 firmware. Not seeing the slowness from either and HD200 or HD100 (20081231 firmware) I loaded Sage Pro, Dynamic Menus, Comskip and tested. Then added Tiki's fanart to stress test it. (I still have fanart setup the old way also.) Nothing out of the ordinary. Check and make sure your java heap didn't get reset. Mine is at 768.

I am unable to "enable" Fanart Backgrounds - When I go into Global UI Options/Display I can't get the Fanart Backgrounds setting to change from Disabled. I have tried this on both a HD-200 and a Placeshifter client with no luck. Is there a prerequisite to this? (Note that I was using Fanart with no problems in 6.3.8.b.12 and it works again fine when I roll back to this version)

Other issues:
In paths there isn't enough vertical room for the Fanart Central File Path line.
When you go into this area to set your path it only shows local drives not UNC drives nor mapped drives. I am using WHS and I keep my Fanart on one of my WHS duplicated shared drives. You can access this via D:\shares\Software\Sage\Fanart but I believe it is considered bad practice to map to the D: drive in WHS.

Fanart

Fanart stopped working altogether on 6.3.9.
In 6.3.9a-7 it works only when you are looking at the movie file itself. No context sensitive fanart.
All options are enabled of course. Wokes ok if I revert to 6.3.8b-12.
Sage ver is 6.5.13.

Just tried SageMC 6.3.9a_8. It is faster from the Main Menu. (My Videos). But I barely notice a difference in scrolling thru the DVDs. It's quite obvious it is handled different by going back to SageMC 6.3.9. It scrolls instantaneously. I'm curious as to what I would be losing in features between the one process from the other. Is it possible to have it as an option to have it work as it does in SageMC 6.3.9 as opposed to SageMC 6.3.9a_8? On a PC it is not as noticable but on a HD200 it is 4 to 5 seconcs between each page scroll. If it is single arrow down, every other arrow down takes between 3-5 sseconds. I don't see this performance issue going back to the default STV either.

I've been thinking about this and I came to the realization that I've probably been barking up the wrong tree. I think that the performance issues might actually be due to the new support for fanart posters rather than backgrounds, since multiple posters have to be looked up and displayed at once. I'll start looking into this tonight to see what I can do to optimize load times.

Aloha,
Mike

I'm not sure if people have tried this, but when I upgraded to the new SageMC (non-prerelease) I was also having very slow transition with the cover art. I then enabled hardware scaling and everything went back to normal again. ui/enable_hardware_scaling_cache=true
