I am an American and several years ago I moved to The Netherlands, the land of Heineken. When I walked into the local pub and asked for "a beer" guess what they gave me? Yes, the cheap local beer - Heineken. When I looked around to see what the young, hip, cool, 20 somethings (which I am NOT) were drinking, they had the expensive imported beer - Budweiser.

The power of marketing.

I soon discovered Belgian Beer and forgot all about Bud and Heineken.

I'm very pumped for the Sage on USB. I can already see how awesome that will be for getting many of your average users setup on Sage. I would even consider going to it (and freeing up a Windows License).

Great interview Brent! Thanks for taking the time, not just to do the interview, but to transcribe and post it on your site, not to mention asking some good questions.

So much of my time is invested with my own Sage setup and in this forum, yet I know so little about this company. This was a fantastic way of exposing that side of this wonderful company.

I'm kind of excited about the USB SageTV as well. What kind of solutions are there on Linux for doing commercial detection for MPEG2 and H.264? And I wonder how easily the DHCP server could be added to the Linux distro? My current SageTV server has dual NIC's. One for the wider LAN and a dedicated one for my HDHR.

The picture I used is from a few years ago at CES. But yeah he looks nothing like that cat does he . Here's an old blog post that has another picture of him.

Some day when SageTV7 is released I'd love to get him on a podcast roundtable or something like that with Ustream so we could get everyone participating. I'm just not set up for that sort of thing at this point.

Tell you what I really learned from our conversation - Jeff is a really bright guy who is focused on us (the users) and making SageTV work for the enthusiast while hopefully expanding that market a bit if possible. It was great for him to take the time to share with everyone.

Yeah, SageTV has it's faults and takes some heat for stuff, but you're absolutely right, spend some time with the SW, especially the betas and working with bug reports and seeing feature requests come through, and it's clear that SageTV (and obviously Jeff specifically) really has a level of commitment to the community that's rare in the industry.

Also a big thanks to Jeff. From what I've read he is focusing on exactly those things that come up on these forums all the time:

- Make it a real HTPC, not a great DVR with other HTPC functionality being just mediocre.
- Make it easier for non-techies to install and setup.
- Make it stable.
- Focus on extenders (for many reasons).
- Focus on the mass (consumer) market.
- Make it work better with Blu Ray (although that sounds like it will take a while longer.)
- Make a better UI.
- Get better "press" (see comments about comparisons to Popcorn Hour.)

I think he hit all the bases. I can't think of another major issue he did not address. Anybody see something I missed?

(Hey Jeff, Maybe you should consider running for Congress. Those "gentlemen" also say everything we want to hear but THEY generally do not follow through while you DO!)

If Jeff follows through on all of this then I'm a happy camper. (I'm a happy camper now, so I guess I'll be a happier camper )

All of this sounds great so based on Brent's comments previously I'm expecting bad news on Hulu. (Probably along the same lines as the iPod comment Jeff made.)

I agree this was a great review. I, too, am excited and concerned to hear about a USB bootable SageTV distro. Sounds great from a simplicity standpoint, but some of the things we enjoy about a windows/mac/WHS will go away for us non-linux users... For example, I run a script that backs up my sageTV directory nightly. I would have no idea how to do this in Linux. Likewise I use "idle" time on the SageTV server to archive my DVDs to mkv's using Handbrake.

Not that any of that should matter. I still think it's a great idea. And it may not be specifically for me, but I could see it making SageTV adoption way waaayyyy easier.

Once again, good job. And thanks to Jeff for taking the time to do this interview.
