1.5TB Seagate and 1.5 and 2TB WD drives & STV
Anyone used these ? I am concerned about "green" issues and Seagate firmware, and would NOT use them in a RAID array, but as single disks on a RAID controller with ATA pass-thru or motherboard SATA.
Any successes/failures/pitfalls? Thanks for any help. |

I can only speak to the 1.5 drives in a raid array. I had them in a raid 5 array connected to a Perc 5/i card and they were junk. Constantly overheated when there was no reason for overheating. Long seek times due to heat, lockups do to firmware.
Occasionally they would not be recognized and i would have to manually unplug the sata connection boot the computer, shutdown, reconnect, then viola they were magically there again. I used these drives for roughly 5 days and returned them. |

I put a 1.5TB Seagate in my WHS about a month or so ago. Firmware was already updated to the latest and was not a "problem one". Haven't had any issues with that drive so far. As more deals come around I'm looking to replace the other 3 x 500GB drives with minimum 1.5TB Seagates.

Heck, I've got 3 "problem child" Seagate 1.5's in my ReadyNAS and it's been fine.

Thanks to everyone. I would only use them as standalone drives. I do quite a bit of RAID 5/6 stuff and know that none of them are suitable for that.
But good to know they are fine as standalone drives. Thanks again to everyone for helping a newbie. |

I'm personally a big fan of the WD Green Powers. They've got plenty of bandwidth for recording and run amazingly cool compared to my Seagate 1 TB drive which is like a tiny sun.

I'm running 1TB WD EVCS Green drives in my WHS box and currently have 6 of them there. The only "complaint" I have about them is that they run warmer than the Samsung HD103UJ 1TB drives. If the Samsung's aren't secured and vibration damped, they will cause noise, however. Once I ensured they were secure, I actually like them better.

I am running 2 of the 1TB WD green drives in my d-link 321 NAS (raided) without any problems. Also have 2 of the seagate 1.5TB drives in my sage server (non-raid) without any problems either. They are all running the latest firmware.
Dell had the 2 1.5 TB seagate drives for $199 (no shipping cost). |

I have piles of SD15 Seagate drives and have had 2 failures out of about 30 drives in the last year and a half. I think that they are no worse then any other large (1+TB drive out there)

I have two Seagate 1.5TB internals and two Seagate 1.5TB externals all operating in a non-RAID setup. The two internals do run a little hot, but I've never had any problems with any of these drives.

I have one "problem child" Seagate 1.5TB and 1 WD 2TB. No issues with either, but don't use RAID. From a heat, power usage perspective, I wish I had two WD drives.

3 Seagates 1.5 TB and 1 WD10EADS among piles of others (300&500Gb).
No issues with the large drives so far. They significantly faster than older drives.

I have 3 Seagate 1.5tb, 4 Seagate 1tb, 4 Seagate 750gb, 3 Seagate 500gb and 1 WD 500gb.. Currently installed: 3 - 1.5tb, 4 - 1 tb, 3 - 750gb...
I had to install extra fans for the Seagate drives as they were overheating and failing (running at 60c+ within 2 days of purchase)... Since installing the extra fans, I havent had any more heat related problems with them (tho they still run hot, 40-45c). At 55c, the Seagate drives will SLOWWW down from like 8ms seek to 500ms seek There was a mechanical failure of one of the 1tb drives and the WD 500gb.. I had issues with WD tech support (which surprised me as I usually always pruchased WD drives in the past as a rule).. They said the drive was out of warrenty when the drive shouldve still been. I no longer had the reciept, so I didnt press the issue.. I havent had any issues with Seagate support (when I could actually get them on the phone).. Seagate drives also have a longer warrenty, 5 years vs 3 years (current consumer level drives) IMO, I wouldnt use anything but 24x7 rated drives in a RAID array.. There is an utility by WD that will enable/disable TLER (essently turning a green drive into a RE drive).. |
