Turn on file sharing on the HD200 and test copying files to/from it. Probably wired, wireless, and maybe wireless to your laptop too.

great suggestion. I think I'll have to try that later this week.

The file sharing performance is much slower than what you will get watching videos. There is a high overhead associated with samba and file access.

Hey _Demo_ -

Completely off topic, but do you pronounce your id as dem-O or is it dee-mO? Or in otherwise short or long e? I have no idea why I am hijacking this thread to ask, but I am just curious.

Right, I agree that's ultimately all we care about. I just think doing some type of stress testing helps to provide some indication of how robust a particular product is. Demo's comment, though, highlights how difficult this is. We're really just trying to stress test the wireless adapter, not anything else. So, apparently doing file transfers doesn't do that very well. The only other thing that comes to mind is coming up with very high-bitrate video files and seeing how high you can get before you have problems. This is tricky though, since you don't want to confuse video decoding limits with wireless transfer limits.

Ultimately, I don't have a good solution to propose. I'm kind of curious how Sage came up with their 40-50mbps figures. I don't doubt them; mostly I'm just curious if those numbers increase/decrease or stay the same with different wireless equipment, in different environments and at different ranges.

If you could get iperf running on it, you could use that to test raw network throughput, but I don't know how you'd get a copy compiled for the extender's processor.

I pronouce it in french as if there was an acute accent on the e. I don't think it matters much for the forums

I have attached an iperf for the HD200.

Never expected it to appear, though I had my suspicions you used something along those lines.

Cool! Brent, do you think you could do a comparison between the 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz adapters (assuming the 5Ghz one works, of course)? I'm not sure how you can make sure it actually connects over the 5Ghz band, other than to hope it says somewhere in your router admin page, or by setting your router to 5Ghz only. Though, 50mbps is quite good. There's really no reason to think it would be any faster unless you're in a 2.4Ghz-heavy environment.

As a baseline here's what I get (iperf running as a server on the extender) wired as a baseline:
Code:
E:\Apps\iperf-1.7.0-win32>iperf -w64k -l32k -c hd200b
------------------------------------------------------------
Client connecting to hd200b, TCP port 5001
TCP window size: 64.0 KByte
------------------------------------------------------------
[1880] local 192.168.0.2 port 3526 connected with 192.168.0.99 port 5001
[ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth
[1880] 0.0-10.0 sec 98.7 MBytes 82.7 Mbits/sec

Thumbs up works great wireless G two floors WPA2 HD

I don't believe it, but it's working working with wireless G playing HD that was recorded from the HDPVR and OTA. Router is in the basement. HD200 is in the bedroom on the second floor. Amazing! If I had one complaint, maybe I would have preferred that the HD200 USB port was on the back (more toddler-proof).

Thank you sage for making this feature!

Brad

I've been playing around with jpref on my laptop and server using a pair of WNHDE111 bridges. So, I'm not sure how directly you can compare this to stanger's numbers, since I'm using a pair of computers, instead of my extender. Still, I would think it would be a reasonable approximation of the speed of an HD100/200 wirelessly (well, sort of) connected to a server using WNHDE111 bridges.

There's no reason I couldn't run on my HD100, other than it isn't immediately obvious to me how I would do that.

Code:
bin/iperf.exe -c 192.168.1.100 -P 1 -i 1 -p 5001 -w 64.0K -f m -t 10
------------------------------------------------------------
Client connecting to 192.168.1.100, TCP port 5001
TCP window size: 0.06 MByte
------------------------------------------------------------
[132] local 192.168.1.103 port 49502 connected with 192.168.1.100 port 5001
[ ID] Interval Transfer Bandwidth
[132] 0.0-10.0 sec 105 MBytes 88.1 Mbits/sec
Done.

You know there IS a USB port on the back of the HD200 as well, don't you?

Okay, for those wondering, the D-Link DWA-160 adapter (5Ghz) does work with the HD200. It just worked. No problems thus far!

That's good. Did you confirm that it was working in the 5Ghz band and not 2.4? Thanks for doing this testing.

I just ordered one of those little suckers. It appears that since the Sage made the announcement the price has gone up almost 30%.

The planets are no longer in alignment. I'm getting skipping on HD OTA - though HDPVR recordings are ok at the moment. (I believe those take less bandwidth).

Ha - you're right, there is a USB port on the back

I have the same router and the same issue. Good to know it's not just me. I think that router does something different with the wireless N...I've always had troubles with wireless N and my mac laptops. I was already thinking of replacing it...this just seals the deal. With WPA off though it works great.
