m4v on client

i have a bunch of unprotected m4v files that play fine on my MVP but crash sage to the desktop if i try to play them on my client. many of them are from handbrake and contain h264 with AAC or AC3 audio. what do i need to do to make them work?

You would need a h.264 video decoder and either an AC3 or ACC audio decoder installed on the PC client. Arcsoft decoders or maybe ffdshow would probably work for you.

i've done more testing. some h264 files work (mkv and m4v), some crash, some are blank video with audio. i made most of these files and i know i changed some settings in handbrake for different ones (mostly audio stuff) so i suppose i must have made some changes that are incompatible.

off to reencode. yay.

getting confused.

depending on if the files are renamed to .mkv or to .m4v/mp4, in some, i get either video/no audio (mkv) or audio/no video (.m4v). graph studio shows that they are being processed with ffdshow video and no audio 'line' regardless of extension. they work fine in videolan (as do the files that crash sage to the desktop). sage is set to use default h264 processor and the systray icon shows ffdshow audio icon if there is sound, no video. same if set sage to use ffdshow for h264.

there has to be a way to make these work, right? or at least, examine the .m4v files that work 100% so i know what settings to use if i reencode?

Time to resurrect this thread

I am having the same issue with PC clients but not with Placeshifter or my HD300.

I am also using Handbrake and using one of the default profiles in it but apparently it is not compatible with SageTV. The files play totally fine on a virgin install of Windows 7 so it is not an issue of codecs for WMP.

Anyone with any ideas??? Otherwise, I have a lot of re-ripping and transcoding again
