I don't know about comskip, but Jere seems to be working on SA still, just very slowly. It's been a couple months since the last beta build, and although I don't use it, it sounds like there are some pretty significant bugs in that version.

the real question is what work do you WANT done on them? They both seem to 'just work' right now, so not sure what more could be done.

As an example, it sounds like SAV1 doesn't work at all on Windows MCE. I'm not doing that, but the fact a bug like that has been left unfixed for a couple months tells me 1) it's far from bug-free, and 2) I shouldn't expect any bugs I run into to get fixed very quickly.

I'm not going to run beta software when the developer has basically disappeared. I don't even run Sage beta software, and they're very good about issuing fixes quickly when bugs are identified. I'm still just running SA v0.9.7 and manually skipping commercials on my HD-PVR recordings. That's fine for now, since most of my recordings are either from QAM or firewire.

SA V0.9.7 IS beta software... and certainly isn't supported at all anymore... still, it DOES work for some things, but not for H.264.

And erik had posted in one of the threads what are people looking for now in comskip. It works very well and works with mpeg2 and h.264. I'm very happy with how comskip works and its performance and couldn't think of anything to request.

Has anyone done a load / speed comparison of SA vs. Comskip lately? I'm currently trying SA 1.0 right now and it's pretty efficient on my old hardware (when it works...there are some bugs).

I tried the latest comskip a couple weeks back and had issues getting it to do anythng, so I haven't really tested it yet..

And were you using the donator's version of comskip? That the only version that supports h.264 HD-PVR files.

I was talking about the SAV1 version, not SAV-0.9.7, when I was talking about the bugs and lack of updates. SAV-0.9.7 is technically a beta, but as far as SAV versions go, its considered the 'stable' version. SAV1 is really the beta.

SAV 0.9.7 basically works fine for me, except as you said it doesn't do H.264.

Ah, good info. Negative. I'll give it a shot if I can't get SA to run consistently during the remaining 2 weeks of my trial.

I'm on pretty low-end hardware, and SA runs well...is comskip as efficient with h.264 files?

(sorry for the hijack traker1001, but it sounds like both are working on their products at least in some level...)

IIRC SA is way faster with H.264, but way more buggy. Though that might have been before eric put some performance improvements in. And was also before I got my i7 that basically rendered performance moot :coo:

Well,
I have now tried both SA 0.9.7 free and ComSkip. I must say, While the setup and config of SA took a little getting use to, I like SA better. It seems alot more accurate and the control seems more detailed.

After a couple of days running comskip I found it was about 80% accuracy and that went down during live detection.

After a couple of days of running SA 9.7 free It seems to be close to 95% to 98% accuracy and that seems to remain constant during live detection. And all in all it seems to use almost no cpu at all (Server Intel Q9650 with 4gb ram)

Now I was a little hesitant against trying SA 9.7 free since the thread said you can't use it with Live detection, However, this seems to be a mis-statement as it works very well with live detection for me.
Also because the versions seem messed up, 9.7 the stable and 1.0 the beta? Can anyone tell me if 1.0 is any better?

Mind you I don't record any Hi-def since my QAM thru Mediacom completely sucks, So I don't bother. However, If I do I very well may goto SA paid version.

The versions aren't really screwed up.. It's actually 0.9.7 and 1.0.0. I actually do prefer 0.9.7's interface, controlled with SJQ or DirMon2... 1.0.0 added Jere's new scheduling piece, which I do not like. You CAN call the 1.0.0 engine directly, from SJQ or DirMon2, but it has zero interface (not even the tray icon), so if it hangs, you don't really have any way to monitor it.

Ah I see, Thank you for clarifying that for me. In that Case Ill stick with the 0.9.7 version. Can I still goto the 0.9.7 paid version If I decide to start doing HiDef Qam recordings?

I'm not sure what the differences between free and paid are. I thought the free of 0.9.7 was a limited time trial. Either way, QAM is all MPEG2, so it should work just fine, HD or no. The only major feature added by SAV1 is the H.264 capability, which only really matters if you've got an HD-PVR, or R-5000 on Dish Network.

IIRC "Free" SA uses whatever random dshow filters it finds on your system. Paid uses it's own custom decoders which are far, far faster, and possibly more consitent/reliable.

I've been thinking about upgrading to an I7-950 from a E6850. What kind of I7 system board are you using? There are more bad reviews on all the I7 system boards compared to the LGA 775 sysem boards.

Actually only the current build (718) of SAV1 has problems with .wtv files. The previous build (680) works fine with .wtv files, but there are some other issues. The live detection is only a problem with version 1.0.0 and not 0.9.7. Jere has been banging away at fixing the .wtv problem, but since he bought an HD200 recently he seems to get distracted by it a bit. There should be a new build very soon.

It's the Intel DX58SO, it's been flawless so far.

SAV1 location?

I'm a bit 'out of the loop' on Showanalyzer.... Been using comskip for H.264, but would like to give SAV1 a try. Where is the download located? I looked all over dragonglobal.biz , can't seem to find anything other than 0.9.7 .

I do have a license for it (did a 'key retrieval' from dragonglobal), pre and post version 1.0... Or do you have to be on the beta team to get a download link?

Thanks,
Larry
