Sage Tv Client network question/troubleshooting.

I recently installed Sagetv Client on a computer that is part of my home network. I've enabled SageTv on one of my computers to be a server and when I run the sageTV client on the other it recognizes that there is a SageTv server on the network but is unable to connect to it. Here is a screenshot to help out:

Then.....

I'm just not sure where to go from here. I wish I could access some kind of error report or something so I know if it's a firewall issue, a connection issue, or something else entirely. I doubt it's a physical connection issue because it recognizes which computer has the SageTV installed and that it's acting as a server.

thanks.

Disable the firewall on both machines to make sure that is not the issue. If it is Win 7 make sure it is designated a private (home or work) network and not a public network.

Thanks for the reply.

It turns out windows firewall is off on both computers. I am also running Windows XP Pro on both--so Win 7 issues don't really apply.

What else can I try?

Have you tried rebooting the server?

Rebooting the server?

I am not sure what that means exactly. If it means restarting the software and turning off/on the server option in the advanced menu, then yes.

My main problem is that the error message is too broad. I wish I knew what the problem was more specifically.

I have a feeling it has something to do with port forwarding and all that jazz.

Maybe if I re-install everything all over again and go through the wizard again, but I don't know. That I think should be a last resort kinda deal.

Can you turn logging on? Maybe something will show up there.

Looks like it might be something related to Java: "Error discovering servers:java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Receive timed out"

The only thing is, why does it say error discovering servers" when it clearly identifies the server when I first run the app (see the first image in my original post)?

Not entirely sure if this matters, but it looks like you have a version mismatch. Client is showing v6.6.2, while server is showing v6.5.9

Does anyone know if Sagetv has over-the-phone customer service/tech help? I don't mean to be an head case, but at this rate, my trial version of the SagetV client is going to run out before I resolve the issue. And I really want to figure it out so I can buy the client software.

And to the above poster, I have updated the main Sagetv app to the most current version and the sagetv client is the most recent one. At least I can cross that off my list.

They do not. Tech support is by email or through the link on the main page of the forums.

I'm pretty sure the first thing they're going to ask you to do is double-check your firewall settings.

Dumb question: have you tried just typing in your Sage server's computer name or LAN IP address into that dialog in place of the auto-discovered address?

As I mentioned earlier, both firewalls have been turned off. And yes, I have tried what you mentioned. I went into cmd prompt and typed ip config to figure out the ip address of the server PC. It was the same as the auto-find. I am not sure how others would have done this, but that was the only way I know. If it's wrong please tell me.

Should I email tech support instead of using the forums? Do the tech support guys get back to you quicker than the forum boards, on average? What's everyone's opinion on the official email tech support. I guess it wouldn't hurt to use both, if i can.

Anyone know if this helps in the troubleshooting at all? It's a log of Sagetv while I tried to run the client on the other PC.

I don't know specifically what those errors mean but they're not normal. My guess is that you have some problem with your network configuration or SageTV setup. Make sure each machine on your LAN has a unique IP address. If your server has more than one network adapter, make sure they all have unique addresses.

It almost looks like you're trying to run more than one instance of the SageTV server software at the same time. This could conceivably happen if, for instance, you start the SageTV UI with the SageTV service stopped, enable the server option in Detailed Settings, and then try to start the service without first exiting the UI. If you're using the service, make sure it starts at bootup before you launch the UI on the server.

Also make sure you don't have any other software on that machine trying to use the same ports as Sage. See p. 18 of the manual for the list of relevant ports.

If you need an official response from tech support, you should email them or use the support request form. Just posting to the forum does not put your issue into the tech support queue, if that's what you're wondering. Also bear in mind that it's a weekend and your support request might not get processed until Monday.

I've checked the I.P addresses for each computer on the network and they each have a unique address.

I've forwarded all the ports listed in the manual to the ip address 192.168.1.4, as in the picture above and there are no conflicts.

I guess i will wait until monday to send in an official tech support question. Thanks anyways for your attention.

And you're sure you have no type of Internet Security/Firewall/Antivirus program running on your PCs like McAfee, Symantec, AVG, ZoneAlarm, Trend Micro. PC Security Shield, etc.? Do you have a functioning DHCP server? Usually built into your router? Each unique IP address begins with 192.168.1.x with x being the only different number?

Port forwarding on your router is for Placeshifter connections coming in from the Internet and is covered in Appendix N of the manual. But I thought the problem we're trying to troubleshoot here involves SageTV Client running on your LAN. Port forwarding shouldn't have anything to do with that, and the ports listed on p. 18 should not be open to the Internet. (They should be open on your server's software firewall, if and when you run one.)

Maybe you can give us a quick description or sketch of your LAN setup, just to make sure everything is connected up the way it ought to be and that your client and server are on the same network segment on the LAN side of your router.

As for the firewall question: I have checked and double checked, i've even turned them all off and re-tried.

I do have a functioning DHCP server. And yes, every computer is a unique address. The Sagetv main app is on 168.192.1.4 and the client is installed on 168.192.1.3

part one: Since i have firewalls turned off, i don't need to mess with ports and all that, is this correct?
And, yes, you're right. I am dealing with just the client software and not the place shifter. Sorry if I mis-communicated something there.

part two: Could you please be a little more specific when you say everything is "connected the way it ought to be and that your client and server are on the same network segment on the LAN side of your router". I am a little confused at what the same network segment on the LAN side of the router means.

Here is a sketch:

Internet cable modem----->Router------> PC tower with main Sagetv app acting as server (hardwired)
.......................................|
.......................................|
.......................................-----------> Laptop with Sagetv client (wireless connection to router)

A few thoughts.

1. When in doubt, reboot.

Earlier in the thread you mentioned that you had turned the UI on and off, and the service on and off on the PC, but you never specifically mentioned shutting down the PC and rebooting. Try that and see if that clears up the problem.

2. Do you know how to assign a fixed IP address? If you're using a machine for a server (like your tower), you may solve some network caching issues in the future by having a fixed IP address rather than one assigned by DHCP. Probably not related to this issue, but since your log indicates some networking issues, I thought I would mention it.

3. Are you sure you know what version you want? Many new users get confused by the user scenarios for Client and Placeshifter, and unless that laptop never leaves the house and/or you want to use the DVD and advanced codec functions of the Client, Placeshifter may be a better investment.

HTH.

Done. Nothing changes.

It seems my router already does that. It doesn't matter which computer is turned off and on and when, it always assigns the same ip address to each computer.

Well, the only reason I downloaded the trial version of the client is because I am only concerned about viewing TV on a PC in my house. I would like to eventually experiment with viewing outside of my house and through WAN, but not yet. I simply want to stick with the LAN stuff right now.

If I am not mistaken, the Client version is for LAN and the Placeshifter is capapble of LAN and WAN connections. Maybe I will consider the placeshifter now that the client is giving me issues.
