HDHomeRun vs Hauppauge 2250

I use an HDHomeRun to access clearQAM cable channels. It works pretty well, except for some pixelation and stuttering.

Does anyone have experience comparing the HDHomeRun to the Hauppauge 2250? Or another "in case" clearQAM tuner card? I'm wondering if the artifacts I'm seeing with the HDHomeRun might be the result of network congestion, or timing issues or something.

1) If you have not already done so, please upgrade to the latest HDHomeRun software from http://www.silicondust.com/downloads

2) Run HDHomeRun Setup, enable Send diagnostic information... on the Advanced tab and click Apply

3) Click Rescan on the Tuners tab

4) Click Scan on the Channels tab

5) Watch live TV on a problem channel until the issues occur, then for 5 minutes after that

Reply back with the device ID for your HDHomeRun and I'll check the logs. Note that for fastest response you may want to post this on our forums or submit a trouble ticket.

I have both. Biggest issue with pixelation seems to be signal strength, both tuners have issues when I have lived in apartments with poor signal quality.

I have both HDHomeRun and Hauppauge 2250. I haven't noticed any stuttering or pixelation with either. The HDHomerun is setup for OTA and the 2250 is setup for analog cable TV. There isn't much clearQAM on Comcast cable in my area. The analog channels are going away soon too.

I have both on 2 systems, and the HDHomerun has a slightly better tuner, IMHO. If you are having problems, either your signal strength is too low to start with, you are splitting too much, or the original signal is too weak.

Get a better antenna, add an amp to the one you have.

The HVR2250 also has analog inputs so if you want security cameras or any other source it's cake with a 2250. Obviously in addition to it's ATSC/QAM capabilities.

Thanks for the security camera suggestion. That would be a great use for the 2250 when the analog cable channels go away.

Really there is a bunch of stuff that can utilize this, you can have the OSD from your amp, a text inserter from who knows what. I also have a DVD changer connected like this.

Maybe I should put in a camera to keep an eye on our puppy during the day...

I put a separate network card in my Sage server to run the HDHomerun. Took care of the occasional network issues I would have with the HDHomerun. No more pixelation, or intermittent stutter when downloading stuff from the internet.

great advise

I was between the HDHR and the 2250
I was hard and fast set on a internal turner. After all the good words on hd Homerun. I got one to replace my pc crashing hd wonder. WOW
did I mention WOW. Very easy to set up install and better than my expatiations, easy sage integration and great signal strength sensitivity.
Thanks all to point to me towards this one.

Now, go get a 2250, and try and set it up without looking at the HDHR config! The only reason it didn't take me too long, is I had all the channels listed from my HDHR. At a guess, save me 2 or 3 hours of trying channels (too many non-HD Digital channels I had no interest in)

Yea I have to admit the setup process on the Hauppauge products is bad and the tools for the HDHomerun are way better. Also though, most of the extended time it takes is for the channel scan SageTV requires.

In the end though I had to have NTSC capture for other stuff I do so I didn't get much choice in what device to use.

I have a 2250 on the way to replace my Avermedia Duet and PVR-500 (doesn't work over 3GB of ram). The Duet fails to get recognized on reboots sometimes (and this is the replacement after they supposedly fixed the problem). I will be taking a sledge hammer to it.

Anyways, I would like to use both OTA and analog cable mixed together. I understand there are separate inputs for OTA and QAM/analog, and I know that no more than 2 at once can be recording.

Is this possible?

If not, I can move my HDHR over to OTA and leave this card to pick up the QAM/analog. I find that having my higher merit tuner for OTA yields a much better video quality (less compression), but it is good to have QAM as a backup in case I already have 2 programs recording simultaneously, or I simply don't receive the OTA channel.

The HVR2250 has only one COAX input (the other is FM). Therefore you can only use QAM or OTA, but not both. I use my HVR2250 for QAM, and my HDHomerun for OTA and QAM (one of each) since I can get most of my locals via QAM with the exception of WB and NBC weather.

Ah, I see (forgot about FM). Ok, that answers my question. Thanks!
