Halt Detected in recording

All, Im in desperate need of some help.

I recently moved to a new server (details in my sig)
I run everything in my network on a Gigabit switch 24 PORT.
After switching to my new server i have recently gotten tot he point where if i have mutliple recordings going i will get errors in the sage system console that say Halt was detected in recording, sage will try and reset. This also causes the spinning wheel of death on the ui when recordings are halted. This doesn't just happen with recordsings it will also happen while watching live tv..which i know is technically a recording so i guess it may be the same issue. So before posting this and over the past several days i have been watching Sage closely and have made sure of a few things:

Firstly i run the following:
- latest sage server XP build
- latest SageMC beta build
- latest phoenix
- latest BMT 4.0 (no AUTO PLUGIN! this was screwing my metadata up immensly and actually caused me some problems with the metadata being so messed up that Sage was becoming unresponsive. I had to manually fix metadata and then all seemed to be fine..)
- Jetty
- Neilms webserver for jetty
- Sage Movie Wall
- TVExplorer
- Playon Plugin
- SlimPlayer

On my server i also run
- Playon Server
- SqueezeBox server

One thing not in my sig is that i have recently stopped using the HVR1600 for recordings and only use it for hardware loopback capture for the SlimPlayer plugin.

1) NETBIOS is installed (eventhough i used the static ip of the server for recordings)
2) All sage recrodings are recorded to local sage server drives via UNC paths, and all drives are formatted in 64KB block size
3) AVG Virus Scan is set to EXCLUDE these drives from any scanning
4) All other additionaly software installed by my mobo disk (Asus) has been removed..so programs like vPower.
5) I do have an HVR1600 capture device which i have read has problems on certain mobos if not in the correct PCI slot, so i ensured that it is in fact located in the first PCI slot.
6) Set Sage debugging to on and have the following code snippet for you all to take a look at

Code:

The first thing you should do when troubleshooting problems is to remove all customizations to help narrow down where the problem may be.

Have you tried the "Delay 600" trick on the tuner which is giving you the halt warning?

I have not, nor am i familiar with it...what do I do?

Opus -

what is the best way to accomplish this. Will removing the jetty starter line from the properties and running the stock STV accomplish this?

Sadly that didn't work. I created the files -- 5 in total one for each tuner, and immedietly upon setting up 5 recordings within 5 minutes i received a HALT DETECTED..." on all 5 devices.

As a next step...not sure if this is what OPUS meant or not but i did the following:

Reverted some of the JARs back to the latest STABLE build no beta especially the sagex.api...not sure if this is used by the default stv or not, but i reverted it nontheless.

I also removed startup classes (only had jetty starting up) and I reverted the ui back to the default STV.

Will report back....

Oh and i stopped playon as well as squeezebox server..

@ PiX64

The first thing you should do is switch back to the default STV with no plugins at all (i.e a completely stock setup). If the problem occurs in this configuration then you can rule out any 3rd party add-ons/plugins and you will be able to contact official SageTV support for help.

I had a lot of problems in the past with halted recordings. They all stemmed from either poor Hauppauge HD-PVR drivers (updating to the latest version resolved this) or occasionally from my cable boxes shutting themselves off. You should check to see what tuners are giving you problems. Is it a specific tuner or is it random?

Aloha,
Mike

PiX64,
Try recording directly to the drives without using UNC paths... Also is your switch a router and gigabit?.. What I did when I was getting problems with recordings was to move the hd homeruns clients etc... to its own switch. Then connect a router to 1 of the ports. UNC is much more slower then writing directly to the HD.

Ill try not using UNC paths.

Currently everything SAGE (3 x hd200, Sage Server, Ubuntu Storage SErver (blu-ray,DVD,Music) and HDHR) is connected directly to a 24 port gigabit switch. The switch is linked to a router.

If this does in fact fix the issue, then won't I be out of luck with commercial skip and the hd200's being able to see the comskip files?

MeiInMaui -

First of I LOVE your SageMC it is simply put AMAZING!!!!
The problem occurs actually on ALL of my devices which are setup as follows:

HDHR - 2 QAM
HVR2250 - 1 conencted for QAM 1 connected to standard def non DVR Comcast STB DCT2000 i believe
ATI USB encoder connected to Comcast PACE DC50x DTA
HVR1600 - Used solely for SlimPlayer Hardware loopback (thought to be causign problems, and was previous being used for Comcast Pace DC50x DTA capture

Physically different (rules out; hardware, drives, etc...)

OK.

I am trying the above suggestion of not using UNC paths first, and then if that doesn't work i will try a phsycially different drive.

Forgot to state that both STB(s) are controlled via USB-UIRT

After recording about an hour of 5 simultaneous streams 3HD and 2 SD, i haven't recieved a single HALT Detected.

Not sure if this is by chance, or if the UNC paths were causing problems. So currently i have the actual drive letter mapped in sage as recordings. Reason i was using UNC paths before was so that the 1 client PC i have could see comskip files. I rarely use this so not a huge deal anymore. I will start adding things back in one at a time to see if i am still successful..

Any thoughts on why UNC paths might exhibit this kind of behavior?

I stopped using UNC paths for recording for that same reason as far as my client goes I mapped the administrative shares to the same drive letters.. I found this explanation a while back.

With the UNC name, your computer will actually query DNS for the ip of itself, unless that info is in the computers cache. Then it probably moves data to the pci bus and then to the disk controller. The extra copy time is because it thinks its moving it across a network connection so is probably buffering the sent packets.

PS I did test on a very large file and found that the UNC copy took twice as long.

copytest.bat
time /t>c:\nounc.txt
copy U:\HGWellsWaroftheWorlds-6022746-0.mpg c:\temp
time /t>>c:\nounc.txt
time /t>c:\unc.txt
copy U:\HGWellsWaroftheWorlds-6022746-0.mpg \\nyplayer\sharetest
time /t>>c:\unc.txt

\\nyplayer\sharetest is a share also on the c drive.

Well it has been several hours and i have been recording on 5 tuners 3SD 2HD with all my plugins and webserver and such up an running, and everything has been working perfectly.

No ui lock ups, no spinning circle of death, and MOST importantly i have not a SINGLE Halt detected in recording.

Thanks so much to all of you for your help. Seems like I am good to go now.

Got a bunch of stuff recording tonight lost, and such, and will be watching simultaneously. So it will be the true test, but I suspect that everything is fixed now.

Thanks again for the great suggestions and help!
