One big problem I have with DVDFab is that I like a Mainmovie rip to create a single file - but the software creates multiple 1GB files which I then have to manually concatenate.

Am I just missing a setting here?

I used to rip DVDs into files, then combine the files into to one large file. It really isn't necessary to do that. I think it is better to rip the DVD into a folder with the name of the DVD and a Video_TS subdirectory.

When you try to combine all the files into one large file, then you loose the chapter marks, which are important in music video DVDs.

If you still want to have one large file, you can rip the DVD with DVDFab or AnyDVD. Then open the VOB files and save them to mpeg with VideoReDo. Then join the mpeg file segments with VideoReDo.

What do you use to playback mkv format? VLC?

And do you give up much in the way of HD video or audio quality? I've only used ArcSoft Total Media Theater 3 for bluray playback and have no experience with anything else.

You lose nothing, MKV is capable of holding pretty much any audio or video format. MakeMKV simply extracts the original H.264 or VC-1 streams, and the Audio (DTS, DD, DTSMA, TruHD, etc) and repackages them in an MKV file.

DVDFAB does DVD to VOB Passthrough creating 1 large file with no quality loss.... look under DVD to mobile settings.

MKV file playback through SageTV? Is this through the BDMV playback process many (like me) are having problems getting to work in v7?

I've downloaded MakeMKV and plan to give it a try this weekend.

I have an AnyDVD HD lifetime updates license. I like that it simply passes the unprotected disc straight through so I can work with it however I desire.

I've used DVDFab before and I think it's a very slick product. The point that I decided against it was because it's insanely priced for what it does in my opinion. Also the fact they are listed on ffmpeg's Hall of Shame for violating their license agreement does not help my opinion of the makers.

I personally use RipBot264 to recode my Bluray's and DVD's since it's free and does a very good job.
