Added driveto SAGE system: USB not working

I needed more space but I’m out of SATA connections on my SageTV system. So I bought a 2TB WD green drive and put it in a Vantec Nexstar3 USB2/SATA enclosure. I’m having issues with slow xfer speeds (6kb/s) and with Win7 locking up when I try to transfer 1.25TB to it over USB. Tho when I transfer one 700mb file I get 34mb/s xfer.

I’m thinking it has something to do with the enclosure’s USB to SATA interface. I was thinking of buying a SATA card so I can use the enclosure’s SATA connection instead.

What do you think? Can someone suggest an inexpensive SATA card? My long term plan is to build a WHS so I’ll go the drive pool route rather than RAID. But if a decent RAID card is cheap then I’d get one to keep my options open. However, If I have to spend $200+ for a RAID card, then I’d really rather just spend $50 on a card with a couple of SATA ports.
