Filtering out vs filtering in

Is there a way to create a view and filter categories OUT vs filtering them in?

I have several movies recorded and because they are manual recordings they sit at the top of the recording queue. I like the intelligent sorting for the most part so do not want to modify the sort method. Looking at the filtering options I can filter based on categories, but that filters IN the specific categories. It would be nice to be able to select movies and have it include anything that is NOT tagged with movie rather than having to select everything except move. Am I missing something here or is this not possible?

While selecting categories for the filter, toggle the button on the left that says "Selected categories are: X", where X toggles between Included and Excluded.

Andy, I haven't looked too closly into the filtering mechanisms, but how difficult woudl it be to add a little extra studio magic to include an Include Categories AND an Exclude categories setting?

I didn't realize that was a selectable option much less a clickable one. Glad the option is there

Could you give an example of how that would work?

Maybe I'm missing something today, but I am not seeing how including a set of categories benefits by also excluding others because by including a set you've already excluded the others not in that set, and if you don't want part of the set that was included, then don't include them in the include list in order to just make them others.

We all know how dangerous the others may be, but so as not to be exclusive about always using inclusion, you could alternately decide to just exclude some and keep all the others. Including more than all the others doesn't seem better than just not excluding them in the first place.

With that said, I'm going to go check the sugar level on the cereal I had this morning and await word on whether I'm missing something regarding this feature request.

hehe, it might not be used all that often, and certainly wasn't all that important when shows had at most 2 categories.. however, now that you throw user categories in the mix, a show may be tagged with many different categories.

Currently, I've got my non-kids programming tagged with one of three categories: Chris, Jaime, and Both. This is then mapped to 3 different Malore views. So if it's just one of us watching tv, then we look through out recordings list, and it shows just the stuff that we watch alone, but NOT the stuff we watch together. This allows us to save those for when we ARE together.
If there were both Include and Exclude category selection lists, I could simply tag the files as Chris, Jaime, Kids, whatever (get rid of the 'workaround' both category), and set my views up a little more specifically (My view would be Include 'Chris', exclude 'Jaime'). Just the first example I could come up with. The possibilities grow when you look at then filtering out specific genre categories as well. (Include 'Movies', exclude 'Kids' user category).

OK, that makes a little more sense to me. I can at least add it to the to-be-considered-in-the-future list.

Another example that I was looking to use user categories for. 4 people in the house, all have their own categories to watch shows. Using the Malore view I can see all the programs I like. But now everyone is watching the shows. There are shows marked as watched that I have not scene. I'd like to create another category for Kevin-Watched. So then I would see Included: Kevin but Exclude:Kevin-Watched.

By the way, this user category feature is awesome. If you can include and exclude in the same filter, it would be perfect.

Now that I think of it, it would be even better if I could remove a category from a specific recording without affecting the other categories. I know there are user categories per recording as well as at the favorite level. But if I go to change them, I change that recording for everyone.

The way I would expect it to work is a top down approach. I set Kevin for series "Bones" favorite. It propagates to all the children (individual recordings) by default. Unless, I watch it, then I want to uncheck Kevin and it won't be in my list anymore. Currently when I go and look at a recording, there are no check marks even though the favorite has Kevin as a user category.
