Poor video quality

I am working on trying to get my Hauppauge HD PVR to work with my ubuntu 64 bit 9.10.

It's able to record now but the video is terrible quality. I've added a custom quality that I saw here in the forums, and tried setting up a max quality. But it's still aliasd and terrible looking.

My source is uverse HD cable via component cables.

I'll look at the clip later. What do you have for the firmware version? Any thoughts on upgrading to 10.10 for newer kernel/better drivers?

That looks like it is accurately recording the interlaced content fed into it. Any problems you are seeing would be in the playback side, which apparently isn't doing proper deinterlacing.

So you dont see the lines?

I've seen them on 5 different devices with different viewers and they always show. I have nearly 1,000 movies on my PC and none of them have those lines.

*confused*

Those lines are the interlaced frames. It's just how they are broadcast (480i and 1080i). Every other line is 'supposed' to be displayed after each other (so all odd lines show for one field, then all evens show for another). The reason you don't see it on anything else you have on your computer, is because they have most likely already been deinterlaced before encoded, or more likely, were from a non-interlaced source (DVD - BluRay, etc). What decoder/renderer are you using?

Well, my friend has a windows version of sage with the exact same recorder and exact same cable company and we don't see them on his.

my decoders and renderers vary. WD TV Live box. Ubuntu (mPlayer and VLC). Whatever apples iMac default video player is.

The linux playback tools basically suck at detecting interlacing, especially where they don't expect it (h.264). Your clip plays perfectly on my HD300. Playback fails on Ubuntu mplayer (no automatic deinterlace) and vlc (no playback at all).

Can you set your HD-PVR to record to some non-interlace format (like 480p or 720p rather than 480i)?

More accurately, you'd have to set your STB to output 720p - again, though, as metnioned, this is a problem in the playback... you COULD just use HD300's and aoid the issue.. :-)

Thanks guys. It sure is working a lot better now. I've been so busy with Halloween that I didn't get a chance until right now to try anything.

For anybody that reads this post and is stuck, I switched my cable box (AT&T uverse) to play in only 1080i mode. *Poof* magically everything is perfect!
