Original audio not playing

Hi, I have a small issue with the audio on files I've transcoded to .avi format on my server. On both Windows 7 and Ubuntu the transcoded 5.1 audio won't play. If the source was Stereo AC3 things work fine on both platforms, but 5.1 is blank.

Also, if I tell the placeshifter to transcode the audio, it also works fine regardless of the source, or platform it's being played on.

If the original file wasn't transcoded on the server, the audio works fine as the original 5.1 AC3. It simply plays the two front channels as neither computer has 5.1 audio hardware.

Since the transcoded file's audio appears to be in the same format as the original, what is happening in the transcoding process?

Also VLC won't play the transcoded audio stream, but will play the original AC3 no problem, and will play stereo AC3 as well.

Also, all of the files work just fine on the SageTV Client. It's only placeshifter that can't play them.
