Will the HDMI cable carry sound

I'm getting a new TV and will be running a new HDMI cable to connect up my HD300. Am I right that the HDMI will carry the audio from the HD300 to the TV?

I second the yes, I don't use HDMI as I have optical to my receiver but the HD300 has HDMI 1.3 which in addition to Dolby Digital and DTS, adds Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD.

Yes it'll work, but audio will be limited to output only in a mode supported by your TV. In general that will mean stereo output only as few TVs have native multichannel (3.1 or higher) decoding.

Any recordings with multichannel sound should be automatically downmixed to stereo before being sent to the TV.

One side effect could be music overpowers the speech in sources with surround. This is common in the UK with programs broadcast in ProLogic/DD but output on stereo speakers. The centre speech channel isn't mixed into the stereo left/right and the music/effects on the left/right channels overpowers the speech.
