HD300 turns itself off 5 sec after I play a BluRay

Yesterday I finally got the HD300 fully functional, I thought. I am running a clean install of WHS on a Dell rackmount server class PC. I currently ony have one client, a HD300. I have MyMovies, and SageTV, and VCD installed on the WHS. I have installed the SMM plugin and it's associated parts on my SageTV server software. I had some trouble with SMM, but I finally fixed it by doing a factory reset on the HD300, and I deleting the HD300's properties file on the WHS, then going through it's initial setup again. So, all appeared to be fine, and I could play regular DVD's fine from the HD300 main video icon, SageTV Video>DVD/BR option, or SageMyMovies plugin.

So next was to get BluRay working...

Initially I could play a Blu-ray from the main HD300 video icon, but none of my BluRays showed up in the SageTV Video>DVD/BR menu list at all. Following help here, I installed VCD on the WHS, and set its service to logon as the same user as the SageTV service does. Then, from the SageTV Options dialog, I refreshed the media, then the BluRays showed in the SageTV list, too. So far so good.

But that's where good stopped. Now, if I choose a BluRay from either the SageTV or the SageMyMovies plugin, the movie starts to play, but 5 or so seconds into the movie, the HD300 turns itself off. No warning, no error it just shuts down, turns it's little indicator light to solid red.

Anyone know how to fix this? Is the HD300 defective? I'm pretty tech savvy and I have to admit it's been tougher than I expected getting this far; I'm about ready to make it defective .

But seriously, can anyone help?

Thanks,
Scott

I have two HD300's. One works flawlessly; I think the other is defective. If the thing is being weird, I vote for defective. ...but that's just me.

Well, the HD300 is a pretty raw product IMO. Lots of room for improvements and polish. But with WAY MORE trouble than it should have been, I got it going. As long as you don't touch it (which causes a static discharge and shutdown) that is. That's just amatuer electronic engineering. I'm surprised it passed EMI testing with that flaw.

I only even tried it becasue it appeared to be the best candidate to do any source direct output. Although I have not had time to test that. I've spent a work week at least just getting the thing to work with SageTV and SageMM, adn BRD.

But anyway, I traced the shutdown problem. It should not shutdown due to the root casue IMO, but in any event, for posterity and for the next poor sap who has to figure it out, here is the solution:

Have you asked Sage (filed a support request) about the powering off when touched? I've touched mine plenty of times with it never turning off.

Not yet, but there's a thread about it so mine's not the only one doing it. No one from Sage chimed in on the thread.

Today mine is back to giving the error "There was a playback error on playback".

I believe it's time to return this package. If they'll let me. Buggy has been an understatement for me.

The forums aren't an official support channel, it's a user-to-user support channel. If you need official support you need to contact Sage directly.

Have. After some delay, I get one reply per day, at about 9-10PM. So by the time I get their next suggestion, adn try it and reply, it's at least 1, sometimes 2 days per exchange. Tedious support to say the least.
