Smile Solved: Newest Beta Firmware freezes HD300

As usual, I intended to update my HD300 with the most recent Beta firmware after I saw it announced.

Seems that this was a mistake: After downloading the software, installation started (screen displays "The firmware is being updated - Do not turn off the device - It will automatically reboot when it is done") but then froze, i.e., the screen with the message never disappears!

Now what?!

teq

*/Edit: All the manual/support pages warn you not to unplug the HD300 during update, so I guess I leave it plugged in before I hear back from support. Or should I try the procedures listed in the manual - which all assume you pull the power cord? (Glad I still have my HD200...)

Mine did the same thing last night after the reboot give it 5 minutes if it doesn't boot up up unplug it. Get your remote and press the back button while plugging it back in. keep holding the back button till you get a screen to restore to factory preset. I had to select download from internet. After the restore try updating it again. It took me till the third try to get it to install the beta.

Just nothing that can beat a helpful community

@mechling-burgh: Thanks a lot, resetting to factory settings and re-installing the update did the trick.

Phew, this gave me a bit of a fright, I thought I had bricked my HD 300.

Thanks, man! Just nothing that can beat a helpful community.

Cheers,
teq

None of mine HD300 would update over internet and they also hang and would not reboot.
I tryed many times and no luck.
I then DL the files to a usb drive and did it though the service menu.
Worked first time on all of them!

Something went wrong building this firmware I think.

Mine locked up on the "The firmware is being updated..." screen also.
I think I'll just wait until the next beta is released.

Mine worked over the internet at the third attempt. When it froze during the first two attempts I just power-cycled it - I didn't need to resort to the mechling-burgh manouevre.

I had the same problem with the last update; in many years of applying beta updates these are the only two I have had a problem with.

This thread is a small sampling, I'm sure. However, I too will wait this beta out.

Took me two tries to get the firmware to update. Thanks to mechling-burgh for the tip on factory reset.

Probably just blind luck but it worked on the first try.

All 3 of my HD300's had issues upgrading - I reported it and I'm sure they're looking into it. That's why it's a beta!

The GUI on mine after installing the beta was like molasses until I pulled the power on it for a bit. Really strange.

My brand new updated HD300 applied the 20110217-2 firmware, but frozen when trying to revert to the original software (20101007-0). After 30 minutes of the "do not power off screen" I power cycled it, and was pleased to find I had not bricked it.

Same thing here

My HD300 device always, every time without fail doesn't reboot after an upgrade. I am always afraid to reboot it manually too early so that I end up with a bricked device. It has been like that every update since I got it in Nov 2010.

Just to alleviate any fears...you can't brick an HD300 by pulling the power at the wrong time during a firmware update. While it may not boot up normally after that...you can ALWAYS use service mode to reinstall the firmware (holding Back on the remote while booting the device). That is a failsafe part of the product that never gets updated or overwritten.

When you go into service mode install the latest release version of the firmware. after that you can install the latest beta firmware. The hanging only occurs when you are going between beta versions.
