How do I get DVD menus working?

Hi there,

I am sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I was not sure where to ask. And I am sorry if this sounds like a silly question, but I can't seem to figure it out.

How do I rip my DVDs so that I get the menus and special features and all the extra little bits?

Normally, I don't want any of this stuff. I have ripped a lot of my DVDs so far with MakeMKV where I didn't want anything other then the feature film. That has been easy.

But I can't seem to figure out how to get it ripped with everything, and then get Sage to understand how to navigate the menus and such from my HD300.

Thank you
Les

I use AnyDVD to get through the DRM.

Then I use CloneDVD to rip my dvd to my hard drive. I choose the clone dvd option which rips the entire disc including menus. I deselect any foreign language tracks and subtitles from being included though.

I then watch the movies using the Sage MyMovies plugin.

Are you just creating a single .iso file and that is it?

Does Sage automatically knows how to find and use the menu data? SMM isn't doing anything special for menu navigation is it?

Thank you for the reply

I personally would not rip to an ISO. I would rip to folder format. All the menus will be retained too. You can use DVDFab to do this and it's free. AnyDVD is great but like what was mentioned you'll need an authoring tool like CloneDVD. There's also DVDShrink and it's free. Don't shrink the file with DVDShrink just keep it 100%. DVDShrink works well with AnyDVD.

I use AnyDVD HD only. No other tools. I pop my DVD in, open AnyDVD HD, choose "Rip video DVD to hard disk" and I'm done, no muss, no fuss. It shows up in Sage and plays like the "real" DVD (menus, extras, etc.)

I always forget that about AnyDVD. I'm so used to stripping out everything that I don't even think about the fact that one can easily rip with it all by itself.

I rip mine to folders not an iso. As was stated you could just use anydvd to rip the full disc, I just prefer to strip the audio im not going to use since its as easy as a click with clonedvd.

Just to let you know anydvd is great, but isn't free. 90% of the time DVDShrink will work for ripping dvd's and is free. Sometimes I have to use anydvd and dvdshrink, but not very often. I also had one case where anydvd prevented a movie from being read properly.

I got in on anydvd when they still had lifetime licenses and it was well worth it imo for removing encryption from my dvd's and blurays.

Does DVDShrink crack encryption? When you are talking about using anydvd vs dvdshrink are you talking about removing encryption or ripping a movie?

Both. DVDShrink cracks encryption, but on a rare occasion it won't be able to. AnyDVD can though. I use both and have never had issues except with one movie.

Smile AnyDVD/CloneDVD work well

I can personally vote for the easy and simplicity of AnyDVD and Clone DVD. They aren't free, but they are simple to use, update regularly and have ripped every DVD I have put in.

I use the folders view for most movies, but for certain DVDs where I want the additional content I rip the DVD into an ISO format.

My directory Structure is DriveLetter:\Movies\Movie Title\TS_Folder.

Just point SageTV to the DriveLetter:\Movies directory and it will import the data cleanly. A little help from BMT and everything looks great.
