Moving from Windows to Linux

I'm looking for a little help.

I currently have a sagetv license for version 6 and an update license for version 7. I had a windows computer hooked to my entertainment system running sagetv 7 but the computer it is getting old and outdated and currently has trouble running any 1080 content.

My solution was to get an HD300 which i received the day that sage closed their online store. Using the extender in standalone mode is very painful but it works great as a client for the sage server. However I would like to decommission the windows PC and move the sage server to my linux server (running ubuntu 11.04). The problem that I am having is every time I try to install sagetv 7 on linux i get stuck at the enter activation key. I tried using the key that I got with my windows 7 version but it just rejects it. I'm not sure if the issue is that the key is a windows only key or that its an upgrade key.

A bit of additional information: the linux version I am trying use is from the sagetv beta downloads on the forum.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

From my understanding, the keys are different. Can not use a windows key for linux.

and since they are not (currently, future highly doubtful) selling any more keys (to include upgrade keys), you are probably out of luck going the linux route.

Although you could reuse your key for a new windows server.

That's what I was afraid of. I am really trying not to have to run a windows server considering I migrated everything to Linux like six months ago including my music server that hosts my music collection to my phone. As a fall back I could run two servers but It would be nice to only have to maintain and pay for electricity for one.

How are you capturing TV in Sage? If you are only using HDHRs, you could virtualize your Windows/Sage server and still only run one box (with two servers), not ideal but given the circumstances it may be the only option if you want to run just one box that is primarily linux.

I think this is the way I have to go to only have one box running that is primarily linux.

I currently only use sage for display, I used to take advantage of the DVR capabilities a lot when I first started with sage a few years ago but currently I use my direct TV DVR box as my primary DVR and I use sage to display content that I have ripped. For a long time it was the only package that would support .mkv, BD rips, and most other formats without any issues.

I think I will virtualize windows on my linux box and run sage 7 from inside the virtual windows. (Not the most elegant solution but it should work)

This should get me by until either google/sage comes out with a better product or I decide to invest in Boxee boxes.
